In the traditional launch of summer, it's easy to forget Memorial Day's origins and significance. For many it's come to mean the start of a summer rental, or the first weekend of summer. For a lucky few it's the beginning of vacation. Yes, there are flags that go up everywhere, often flying until after the Fourth of July. There are parades. But many no longer recall or reflect on the holiday's deeply patriotic and emotional roots. Much as those serving today have faded from the headlines and in the foremost thoughts of the public.
Memorial Day’s beginnings can be traced to another time of war more than 140 years ago, when local women organized to lay decorations upon the many graves of the fallen. Hence, it was first known as Decoration Day, with the first proclamation being issued on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan (national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic), in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
Since then Memorial Day has become many things to many people, but its original intent is still held in reverence by many others. As we enter our tenth year of combat on foreign shores let us recall the more than 6000 who have fallen and honor their service.
NFTT would like you to join us in honoring their service by offering comfort and a taste of home to those who still serve. You can do this by helping us send 300-600 Care Packages.
The goal for 2011 is 600 Care Packages assembled in Minneapolis, that equates to approximately $100,000.00. Again this was decided upon after seeing we could assemble 300 in 45 minutes in Pittsburgh. Those boxes had a retail value of approximately $210.00. The items we'll be sending will be comparable to what was sent last year. However, that list is subject to modification based on suggestions, request and needs. Btw, check out the NFTT website.
The NFTT diaries are a way for the Daily Kos community to support the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and their families. We send them packages of items they might not otherwise receive through the normal military process but that they find useful. This is a non-political diary. While we understand there are differing views on the wars and the warriors, the site gives plenty of opportunity to express those views elsewhere. Furthermore, we would hope that users do not engage with those that attempt to hijack or otherwise disrupt these diaries.
We appreciate your understanding and support. Thanks!
Netroots For The TroopsTM is a project of Netroots for the Troops, Inc., a Virginia non-profit corporation. Netroots For The TroopsTM raises money for the assembly, mailing and delivery of care packages to American military in war zones, and to provide assistance to military families in the United States. On with the games!!
Mojo Friday Guidelines
1) If you comment you have to recommend all comments. (in order to receive mojo you have to give mojo. It's only good mojo manners.)
2) Everything you say may be taken as a joke (so if you ask a question, expect a silly answer)
3) You must recommend the diary (and pimp it unapologetically)
4) You don't have to comment to recommend.
5) You can't steal my idea (right, like that ain't goin' to happen)
6) Please, no pictures or YouTubes until after 300 comments. Now, after 300, use a little common courtesy and be responsible in the number.
7) Mojo mojo mojo mojo, mojo mojo mojo.
8) TexDem (that's me) is not bound by the guidelines. Heh
