To the surprise of no one who's been paying any attention for the past couple decades, Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) displayed a complete lack of any understanding of the carbon cycle in his questioning of Obama administration climate change envoy Todd Stern. Rohrabacher pointed out that rain forests are a major source of greenhouse gases, and questioned why the administration isn't proposing to clear cut the forests.
The congressman's proposal might seem reasonable to anyone who doesn't understand that rain forests are also a major carbon sink, and have been part of the planet's carbon cycle for millennia, unlike oil and coal that have been sequestered underground for millions of years. One can speculate that many of Rohrabacher's constituents belong in the "anyone who doesn't understand" category.
Also to the surprise of anyone who's been paying attention for the last couple decades, the New York Times actually interviewed real scientists who pointed out how bizarre Rohrabchoer's line of questioning was. Forest science professor Beverly Law mentioned that soil emits far more greenhouse gases than the rain forest, and that we should be grateful the good congressman isn't going after our dirt too.
