My father is one of the most giving people I have ever met.  He volunteers his time at church, to his neighbors, to his family and friends.  He is also very involved with the American Legion in the town where he grew up, Lodi, NJ.  He spends every Thursday there, and gives a significant amount of his time to the running of the post, and has for as long as I can remember.

In December of 2005, the attic of the American Legion caught fire while undergoing renovations.  The building was ultimately destroyed.  My father was devastated, as were the other legionnaires that are involved with the post.  Unfortunately for them, they were under-insured.  I've watched these dedicated men and women work their hearts out for the last 4 years trying to get this post rebuilt, overcoming hurtle after hurtle, which brings me to the purpose of this diary.
What a perfect time of year to remember our Veterans and all they've done for us.  How can we give back? As I was thinking about what to do about that, my father was talking about all the work they still have to do to get the Legion rebuilt, and how much more they needed (over $150,000).  He's never given up hope during all these years, and I thought how wonderful it would be if I could give him and the other members of Post 136 a gift.  Remind them that good deeds do indeed get rewarded, and faith is the greatest tool we have.
I could go into stories of what a special place this Legion is to my whole family, not just my dad.  How this is where we would spend every Memorial Day, and how this is where my wedding shower was held, and our family Christmas parties too.  How it breaks my heart to see my dad becoming more jaded, when he has one of the most open hearts I've ever seen, but that's really not the point of the diary.
My diary is about asking the DailyKOS community to help me give my father a gift that he will never forget.  I don't need him to know where the funds came from (or at least not that I asked for them), I just want to see the look of joy on his face when the money is there for them to finish the work and open the doors once more.  I want to see how happy he is when they have their first pancake breakfast, or more importantly, induct their first new Commander into the Post in the new building, and I want to know that I helped do that for him, with your help!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  I give you a Rec' & Tip for your nice story (0+ / 0-)

regarding your Father's participation in the community and his Legion post.

You are probably not going to like this but:

I do question why you would put out a call for donations on Kos. This legion posts plight does not sort of fit the purpose of this site. I know how over the years members here have given to needy causes but your Father's post is chartered by the American Legion. That's where the appeal for funds should go. What does the New Jersey American Legion Department Say? DEPARTMENT OF NEW JERSEY
    ROBERT W LOOBY,  COMMANDER
    JOHN D BAKER,  ADJUTANT
    135 W HANOVER ST
    TRENTON, NJ 08618-4823
    PHONE: 609-695-5418

Are they even involved in this?

Are you aware that there are over 14,000 American Legion Posts in the United States? If each post sent a check for $11, that would be enough to cover their shortfall. How about sending out letters to all the American Legion posts in the US and asking for donations? Each post could send $100 and that would give your Father's post $1,400,000+ to rebuild.

If they haven't rebuilt in over 5 years, why didn't they merge with another post close by as the story implies they are in over their heads with rebuilding? There are several within a few miles. The story of their plight you linked to is almost two years old and they aren't any further along?

I've been a member of the American Legion since 1967 and have given of time and money for other posts who have suffered hardships over the years.

Amazing the Time I waste Here! Sometimes it's not wasted though!

    •  Not sure why I wouldn't ask here (0+ / 0-)

Legion is a non-profit organization.  They have always done fund-raisers, so I see no reason to NOT ask for donations to support our veterans.  I appreciate the information on the New Jersey American Legion, but again have to state that I see this as no different as many of the other diaries asking for donations to help with medical expenses, unemployment and many other issues.  Sure there are other ways of getting help, but I see no reason they shouldn't reach out to EVERY source of help they can get.  Mama always told me not to put all my eggs in one basket! :)

      Thanks again!
