There's a reason for the policy of not negotiating with terrorists or hostage-takers:  it sets a horrible precedent and rewards outrageous conduct.  This is no different.  No matter how bad the short-term financial and economic consequences may be of letting the Federal government default on its loan payments, the long-term consequences of rewarding irresponsible, extremist Republicans for their tantrums and willingness to take the U.S. economy hostage will be far worse.  What could possibly make the White House, or anyone, think that this would be the only time they try this tactic if they see that it works?

What makes this situation even more insane is that, while the Democrats allow themselves to be held hostage by the Republicans' threat to default on the national debt, it is actually the Republicans who are hostages.  Let me explain. (more below the fold)

The reality, as every thinking person has figured out, is that the Republicans in Congress will not really go through with their threat, at least not the ones who are not Tea Partiers (whether ideologically or rhetorically).

Does anyone with political intelligence really think the Republicans' Wall Street backers would let them bring the U.S. government into default?  Really?

The White House and Congressional Democrats need to CALL THEIR BLUFF!!!!!!!  Put the Republicans in the hot seat and let them make the difficult decision of siding with either their extremist base or their big-money supporters.  You know that, in the end, they'll take their marching orders from Wall Street.

In summary (and to mix metaphors :-)), expose the emperor (Republicans) as having no clothes, for it is the REPUBLICANS who have been taken hostage ... by Grover Norquist and the Tea Party.  Why on God's green earth should the DEMOCRATS participate in destroying our economy and society in order to help the Republicans out of a bad situation of their own making???

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

      - Subsidies to Corporate Agriculture
      - Subsidies to ethanol
      - Cut defense spending n Germany, North Korea, Japan, Italy, etc. (don't get me started on our current 4 wars)
      - Cut all but the most promising new weapons programs.
      - Cut the military staffing for new weapons programs.
      - Apply anti-trust law so drug and medical device companies cannot charge more than 105% of what they charge government and the private sector in the top 5 European countries

Over ten years the above should be about $2 trillion if not more.

    but you are basically right.

The only catch is, that to allow the Republicans to shoot themselves in the foot as they so richly deserve ... there would be some nasty collateral damage.

government, which would in turn ruin the economy right now, favors them. How exactly are they hostages? They're not bluffing. They win by doing this. It's set up that way. They run on government being broken, win, prove it, then run in it again. The tea party didn't hold anyone hostage. The tea party is republicans.

The House GOP Freshmen & Wall Street are the hostage takers.  Boehner & Cantor are the hostages.  They'll shut up & do as they're told by Wall Street & the Baggers.

And....they'll do it before the August 2nd deadline.  With a big toothy, Ayn Rand grin on  their faces.

Do any of these imbeciles know that Ayn Rand hated religion?  She thought anyone who believed in God was evil.  She hated safety nets but the old gal bellied up to the Social Security bar as soon as she could.  So did her hubby.....for the rest of their lives.
