That's Climate Progress because you get stories like this:
Study: Carbon release to atmosphere 10 times faster now than 56 million years ago, the PETM, a time of 10°F warming and mass extinction
That's the second time I've used that headline on a diary. Quite regularly Climate Progress blogs about the really, civilization ending bad news. While we rage about what the crazy fucking Republicans are doing in WI or MI, Climate Progress reports that the global ecosystem is not waiting for us. Reading Climate Progress indicates to me that we are way beyond the climate tipping point
The possible if not probable consequence of this rate of CO2 admissions in this latest article:
“Rather than the 20,000 years of the PETM (Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), 55.9 million years ago) which is long enough for ecological systems to adapt, carbon is now being released into the atmosphere at a rate 10 times faster,” said Kump. “It is possible that this is faster than ecosystems can adapt.”
After a soaking wet spring here in Southern Minnesota we've had back to back record high days - 99 each day. It was 103 in The Cities today. That's the hottest day in the Cities since 1988.
Back to the site I dread:
Again, this bad news isn’t big news to Climate Progress readers. A year ago I wrote about a different Nature Geoscience study, which found our oceans are acidifying 10 times faster today than 55 million years ago when a mass extinction of marine species occurred. And the UK’s Royal Society published a 2010 paper that noted, “Palaeotemperature proxy data from across the PETM indicate a coincident increase in global surface temperatures of approximately 5-6°C,” which is to say 9° – 11°F.
Well it is big news to me, but it is not surprising news to me. Man made climate change caused events are in the saddle and could ride humanity to extinction a century or two in the future - if we are lucky.
And the House of Representatives can't pass a resolution that says humans activities are in part responsible for climate change.
