Rock's take on the Tracy Morgan blowout is this, "I don't know about you but I don't want to live in a world where Tracy Morgan can't say foul inappropriate things on stage." Neither do I. There is not one person on this site who actually saw Morgan's routine. All of this rage and vitriol is based on one offended audience member's point of view. My God people are calling for Morgan to lose his job based on something they are receiving as second hand news.
What about the majority of audience members who enjoyed Morgan's performance?I am talking about the majority of audience members that received this part of Tracy's routine with "thunderous cheer and You go Tracy's"? Should they also apologize for enjoying a comedy performance that they paid money to see? Maybe we should force them to sit thru a session of GLAAD sensitivity training.
Tracy Morgan is a comic, he is not leading a movement. He is not advocating anything. He is telling jokes. Some jokes are going to offend. Some jokes are going to go too far and fall flat from the weight of their own poor taste. But they are jokes. Comedy to be good has to offend some. Not because it is cruel, but because it is saying the unsayable. At it's best it talks about topics we shy away from discussing, opens cans of worms, makes some laugh while making others cringe. Obviously quite a few folks who saw Tracy's show that night had a good time, they laughed and enjoyed themselves. Sucess.
Is this really the path you want to go down, calling for someone's job, because he made some jokes that someone else didn't find funny? Is this the future of comedy? I don't want comedians shaping their material so as not to offend anyone to the point where they might lose their day jobs. I think that would make for poor comedy. if you find Morgan's material offensive by all means don't go to his show.
Let me remind all of you who are so concerned by this. You weren't there. You didn't see the show. If you are going to take the time to be so fucking outraged, that you are compelled to demand an apology, or worse call for someone to lose their job, at least take the time to know what you are talking about firsthand. And even then chalk it up as some comedy that you find offensive, warn your like-minded friends to stay away, and leave it at that. Don't ruin it for everybody. Because if you do you are really behaving no differently than some Evangelical blowhard calling for Marilyn Manson's head on a stake. You are the PC scold with no sense of humor deciding for everyone what is funny and what is not.
I swear to God if my kid ever came home from school whining like some PC punk I would stab Tracy Morgan's son in the face.
