On Thursday Rachel Maddow went nuts on the Democrats for Weiner-gate. This thing and some of the stupidity that goes on in what is called the New York State Senate have drawn me out of my shell.
I can't say that the Weiner fiasco didn't amuse me, I look at the reaction as a larger thing. A few of my thoughts below.
I've not commented on anything politically for quite some time. Mostly out of disgust, but this story I'll bite on.
At the start, I'll cop to having fun with the story. It was very easy to do such.
Do I think Anthony Weiner should have resigned? Sure, if you are upholding standards that say your public servants have a responsibility to act in ways that exceed to social norm and don't bring disgrace upon our system of government.
But, if you were going to hold our leaders to that standard, most of them would need to resign, immediately.
The simple fact is that the democratic system we have such so called live and respect for is damaged, harmed, or, possibly, broken because of decades long whittling away of standards, ethics, and contempt for the people that these leaders have been elected to represent.
I don't disagree with Rachel Maddow's statement that this is something that could haunt the party for a decade, but I do believe that it is irrelevant. I think that for the most part the Democratic Party doesn't care about doing the right thing, only being perceived as having tried to do the right thing is more than enough so that they can continue to feed into the system that so heavily rewards them with lobbying positions once their time in elective office is over.
Anthony Weiner is probably just a sacrificial lamb for the Democratic Party's continued platform of saying that they won't to do the right thing, but just can't seem to get around the obstruction and inaction of their opponents. But do please keep voting for us, we promise to keep trying.
