Summer is full of opportunities to see this beast in his natural environment: the backyard barbeque. And though your right-wing uncle may have home-turf, you can come armed with some questions that will really disarm any right-wing smarminess.
Most right-wingers think that Government should only do one thing: protect property rights, intellectual property rights included. At the same time they denounce any other Governmental activism as Freedom Destroying Big Government. You're going to amaze your uncle by showing that the pet Governmental activities of the right-wing are just as freedom-destroying as any stimulus package and are what necessitated Big Government in the first place.
1) Property Rights. Property rights are the ability to call the police and have the police haul away any unwanted people from your property. It's not the right to kill anyone. It is the right to use Big Government in a way that you want.
From the start, the US had very few property rights problems because there was just so much land to be stolen from the Native Americans, er, bought from the French and won in a war with Mexico. No one would try to loiter on your lot, because they could always get a lot from the Government if they agreed to use the land. This land was only available for white settlers by the use of Federal troops and whole wars to drive off the Native Americans. That seems like pretty Big Government.
2) Intellectual Property Laws. IP Laws are the government telling people what they can or can't produce and backing up those rules with the force of law. Sounds pretty tyrannical to me.
But your uncle will complain that only the person who first invented the product should control the patent. Well, guess what, Big Government decides who first holds the patent. Ask the guy who invented the telephone before Bell, or the light bulb before Edison. And all right-wingers know how easy it is to bribe a public official, right?
At this point he'll be sputtering that we have to make sure that our patent offices and police forces are corruption free and that he's sure we have the finest quality bureaucracy in the world. But now he's having OUR conversation.
