So said an enthusiastic little boy in my class this morning.
"A boat!" I matched his excitement. "You're going on a boat. Awesome!"
And I received the explanation from his mother.
"We're going up to Boston. We'll be taking the ferry from Orient Point."
The Orient Point ferry takes riders from the eastern most tip of Long Island's north shore to the southern coast of Connecticut where you can then hop onto I-95 and straight up to Boston.
(A route, I must add, that will also be taking me to Net Roots 2012 (Oh thank you so very much)
Anyway,as much as this little boy was so excited to be taking a boat ride, his mother was equally excited to be attending the wedding of her cousin to the woman she has loved for fifteen years.
"They couldn't wait anymore," his mother told me. "Last year my cousin needed gall bladder surgery and they realized how 'left out' of medical decisions each was to the other.
"All of a sudden, it was no longer about 'I love you and want to be with you forever', but 'Will I hold your hand before surgery?- Will doctors consult me about decisions? Will doctors even acknowledge me at all?"
So, the little boy's mother told me how they sold their house, quit their jobs (one is a nurse, the other a legal secretary) and headed up to Boston to insure their future together. It wasn't an easy decision. All they have in Boston is each other. The families of both are on Long Island and in New York City.
But they got jobs rather quickly, found an apartment right away and reassured everyone that they would not become Patriots fans.
They are getting married tomorrow.
And tonight, New York just said, "You could have waited- we just made it right."
Oh- but then my little friend would not have had his boat ride.
