Good morning, and Wave That Flag! Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
Denver is in hot weather season — although it hasn't been too bad… yet.
This week Denver's highs have been in the 90s; fortunately we also had a couple of good thundershowers giving us close to a half-inch of rain. July is Denver's stormiest month — if we're going to get hard by hail, chances are it will happen in July. Sometimes it seems as if fireworks are redundant, as Mother Nature gives us plenty of light shows.
July is also when Denver can get stuck in day after day of weather over 90°. That's not too bad if we get a thunderstorm to cool us off of an evening, but if we don't, oy! Not everyone in Denver has central air; with a well-built house (like Our Old House, constructed in 1887), we do quite well most of the time with exhaust fans and swamp coolers. However, without a good drench of rain once in a while, the heat can build up in the brick and the house never really cools down.
The National Weather Service is predicting that our July will be a bit warmer and drier than "normal" (although recent years seem to blow the hell out of the idea of "normal" weather). Here's hoping for timely thunder-dumps, sans hail.
This pretty thing is agastache Acapulco Salmon and Pink. I adore agastache, and particularly like this one's bi-colored flowers. It reminds me of a Colorado summer sunrise.
It's going to be a busy weekend; actually the busy-ness has already started. We usually go down and visit the Mister's family in Pueblo (or as the Natives say, "Pee-eh-blow) for the 4th of July. However, this year I was unable to get the 5th off, and there's no way I want to go into work the next day — so we're going to Pueblo tomorrow. Which means Frankenoid's Ice Cream Factory is open for business.
So far, I've made coffee for my mother-in-law, two batches of fresh peach, and a batch of raspberry cheesecake. Da Boys have requested more chocolate, I have lemons to make lemon custard and, of course, I have to make some more of my own favorite, peanut butter. Yup, the super-duper self-contained ice cream freezer was definitely worth the money. It gets a lot of use around here.
And today I have tentative plans to meet with an out-of-town Kossack: jlms qkw is in town. We're hoping to wander down to my local yarn store together, although she'll have to close her eyes and forgive my very, very messy house.
Out in the garden (oh yeah; the garden… duh) the snap peas have shot their wad and need to be pulled out.
But with the hot weather, the rest of the veggies are really taking off. There are baby tomatoes and peppers on the plants, the squash, melons and cucumbers are blooming, and the kohlrabi are starting to bulb. Since the snap peas have stopped producing I've really missed wandering through the yard, munching on goodies from the garden. Hopefully in a couple of weeks that lack will be rectified.
That's what's happening here. What's going on in you garden?
