Hi all-
Last night, I participated in a town hall meeting with Congressman Cummings and Professor Elizabeth Warren, currently heading up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). I was honored to be there and to speak. Over 400 attendees packed the auditorium to hear about the CFPB, which will officially launch on July 21st. This new agency seeks to make financial transaction easy to understand, so that consumers know the costs and the risks of a product up-front. They have already started this mission by created a simple mortgage disclosure statement that they posted for public comment on their website.
The word consumer is in their name for a reason. This is OUR agency, dedicated to helping ALL consumers in the financial marketplace. The CFPB is about fair regulation and not squashing financial innovation and the free market. Professor Warren said that she’s involved because she has faith that people who work hard and follow the rules should have a chance to succeed.
Many people are already trying to dismantle the CFPB before their doors even open. That’s where you come in. Please visit their website (www.consumerfinance.gov) to see their great work and sign up for their updates and/or follow them on facebook/twitter. Washington needs to see that millions of Americans care about their own financial security as well as their neighbors. You don’t have to be a policy advocate to do this. Please get involved and stay involved by lending your thoughts and concerns to the CFPB through their website. It’s only as good as we can make it together.
Feel free to distribute this email as widely as you see fit.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend,
