July 7, 2011 - What a great day for Democrats and Progressives on Daily Kos.  I've never been prouder of my party to see all the fantastic action diaries, that felt like fresh air blowing through the 'sails in my soul,' to once again set me back on tract.

As the saying goes, 'Now that's what I'm talking about.'  I'm so proud of my party on this day, and we need much, much more of this focus on our own party, and President and a lot less on the fucking Rethugs.

We know what the Rethugs want to do, but right now, I'm more worried about what is left of the Democratic Party, it's platform, our principles, the middle class and poor.  The good news is that we have indeed reached a 'breaking point,' and we know this.  The bad news is not understanding that reality and either apologizing or marginalizing exactly what destroying Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid means for millions of Americans under a Democratic President.

I was pondering one of the best essays I've read in weeks entitled:  'Voting with Fear: The Evil of Two Lessers' by Margaret Kimberley.  Ms. Kimberley nails it right down to the very heart of the matter:

Neither President Obama nor any other Democratic leaders are willing to stand up for what used to be bedrock principles of their party. Democrats once knew with certainty that the already fragile American safety net was protected by their own and under threat only from the other side. Now we see that it is under threat from all sides, with no one in the political system willing to take a stand and fight for their constituents' needs.

The 2012 political campaign has already begun in earnest. President Obama is raising millions of dollars for his campaign and congressional Democrats are doing the same for themselves. They base their request for fund raising and other support on Democrats' fear of Republican control, but there is no reason to once again remain loyal to them when they have no loyalty to anyone except the heavy hitter fundraisers.

snip...

While Democrats were always a war party, just as much as Republicans, they were also known for their willingness to use the federal government to create and enhance programs which benefited working people. They protected and expanded the modern welfare state as it existed in this country. President Johnson was responsible for the horrific escalation of the war against Vietnam, but he also was responsible for the very existence of the programs which Democrats are now ready to eviscerate. Johnson was the embodiment of the lesser of two evils argument, attacked because he waged an aggressive and immoral war, but at the same time credited with responding to movement demands and eliminating poverty for millions of people. That lesser of two evils argument now has almost no meaning. Not only is Obama keeping the country in a perpetual state of war, but at the first sign of Republican resistance, he is willing to throw what used to be the foundation of the Democratic party under the wheels of a bus.

http://www.counterpunch.org/...

And as Ms. Kimberley so astutely points out, there was always a 'trade off' in our own party vs. our Democratic Platform, but now that is disappearing right before our eyes.

I've been thinking these past few days about one of the most remarkable words from a great Tennessee Williams play: 'A Street Car Named Desire,' in which the main character, Blanche Du Bois says:

But some things are not forgivable. Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable! It is the one unforgivable thing, in my opinion, and the one thing of which I have never, never been guilty.  A Streetcar Named Desire. Blanche to Stanley, Scene 10.

Certainly as some say, politics is a blood sport, but then there is the other side to what we are now witnessing in our nation, and our own party.  I fully understand if you do not agree with me, but I do believe that what is going on in our own party is without a doubt absolutely 'deliberate cruelty,' on the part of President Obama, the Blue Dog Democrats, other cowardly Democrats, and of course the utterly insane Rethugs.

1.  It is without a doubt to me 'deliberate cruelty,' to allow a sitting Democratic President to destroy the New Deal: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, that will fully impact the most helpless in our nation: the elderly, the poor, children, the disabled to once again pay for the endless insane wars, and the sins of Wall St./the Banks that knowingly and fraudulently destroyed our entire national economy.

2.  It is without a doubt to me, 'deliberate cruelty,' to allow our Armed Forces to be put in harms way in illegal wars, that are for the sole purpose of oil/for blood and to keep the well greased machine of the MIC and private contractors and war profiteers sucking the blood and treasure out of this country.  $4.4 trillion and counting.

3.  It is without a doubt to me, in a world fill with so little love, and indeed, 'deliberate cruelty,' for this President and our own Democrats to not stand up for equal rights for our Gay Brothers and Sisters.  In DADT, or DOMA, or on any other issues.

4.  It is without a doubt to me, 'deliberate cruelty,' to me to keep allowing the Corporations to sell our jobs overseas, to not fully stand up for the Unions, to continue these insane NAFTA so called free trade agreements, that undermine the Middle Class and poor.

5.  It is without a doubt to me, 'deliberate cruelty,' to marginalize, or generalize, or dare to call another Democrat or American who is in deep despair, as somehow addicted to 'despair porn.'  That is heartless, that is cruel, and is shameful and disgusting behavior.  Millions and millions of Americans are in fact in deep despair, and why shouldn't they be?  They've lost their jobs, they've lost their home, they've lost their savings and pensions, they've lost the equity in their homes, many have been illegally foreclosed upon.  Many are now facing the prospect of losing their unemployment insurance, and their food stamps.  Many can no longer afford the continuing skyrocketing health insurance rates.

So here we finally are, at our 'push come to shove moment' in our own party.  That is why I am so damned proud of the great activists on this site today.  Congratulations my dear, dear friends, YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT.

Only let's remember who did the pushing and why we are being shoved into this final battle to keep our party and the New Deal intact, and to save our own party platform.

No body is in denial here.  We got the fucking memo.

What do we do?  We strike while the irons are hot.  This is our preemptive moment in history:  We call, and we call, and we call until we are all blue in the face from today onwards, until they get the message:

White House: 202-456-1111

    Nancy Pelosi: 202-225-0100

    Harry Reid: 202-224-3542

    Van Hollen: 202-225-5341

    Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121

White House Fax: WH FAX # 202-456-2461

While all the secret backrooms deals are being held, and don't be surprised at all if this comes down to the midnight hour, and again, don't be surprised at all if it comes down to one of those bullshit 'voice votes,' but only we can stop this before it happens.

What do we have to lose?  Everything.  What do we have now?  You tell me.

The time for the apologists, and excuse makers, and deniers of where we are now is in the past.  No one is buying it, because 'The Evil of Two Lessers,' is nothing more than bullshit at this point.

Deliberate cruelty is unforgivable, and it happens every single day on this site, and all over our nation.  I will not stand for that any longer.  I fully expect that from the Rethugs, but our party is supposed to be better than that.  Apparently, President Obama and our party forgot who the hell they represent, and who the hell is paying their bills.  Apparently they forgot the Party Platform, but that Platform does not belong to them, it belongs to us.

I am now reminded of two of my most favorite Kurt Vonnegut quotes:

A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.   Kurt Vonnegut, Sirens of Titan
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’ ”           Kurt Vonnegut

Carry on, and again, I'm just so damn proud of many of you.  We must not let President Obama, or other Democrats or the Rethugs destroy our party or our nation.  They were the ones that pushed us into this catastrophic disaster, and there has been absolutely NO ACCOUNTABILITY, for their continued actions to now 'finish us off, strip us down to the bone,' for their so called 'Shared Sacrifice and Austerity Movement.'

Americans have already paid the greatest price for the past 30 years, but the last 10 years have been like a runaway train with no brakes going about 400 miles an hour, and picking up speed everyday.

Again from Ms. Kimberley's great essay, and ain't it the truth:

Neither President Obama nor any other Democratic leaders are willing to stand up for what used to be bedrock principles of their party. Democrats once knew with certainty that the already fragile American safety net was protected by their own and under threat only from the other side. Now we see that it is under threat from all sides, with no one in the political system willing to take a stand and fight for their constituents' needs.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The person does not know the true definition of cruelty which I like to define as the failure to alleviate suffering when doing so is readily within ones power.  Your response shows your true nature.

I had a Jesuit priest in undergrad once say that if he had to give one sentence to abide by it would be: Do nothing that causes others to suffer and when you are in a position to do so, alleviate the suffering of others.  I have always had a hard time squaring the evagelical crowd's hatred of universal health care with the story of the Good Samaritan.  Other than scale, how do they differ?

Hitting click and reading anything voluntarily is not even within the realm of cruelty.

Right now, more than ever, this country needs jobs and a social safety net we can depend on.  Why would we want to have a dialogue on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the deficit now with about 20% of our working population either unemployed or underemployed?

Wrong dialogue at the wrong time.

If the issue is the deficit, then the dialogue should be about the two greatest contributors to the deficit: 1) lack of adequate revenues caused by the Bush tax cuts that Obama extended and 2) the bottomless Treasury draining black holes of the wars we are currently engaged in.  Once those issues are addressed, then maybe we will no longer need to worry about the deficit or a dialogue hell bent upon gutting our social safety nets.

More tax cuts would be gluttony in a time of starvation. That is not America. That is a nation about to be plundered, and a people laid to waste. - Charles Blow

HR to a comment that is, in today's DKos4 environment, a rather reasonable objection to a diarist's post...

To be honest, I'm old and tired and am about to give up on the whole process because I've been around these issues for a long time and don't see anything getting better, but  my initial reading of the posts led me to to the personal internal observation that Item 1 was hyperbole and that Items 2, 3, and 4 needed to be fleshed out a bit more so that I could better understand why I should care...

I mean, I care about these issues and understand why I want to care about these issues, but the short-hand dogwhistle nature of the diarist's reference seems to assign blame without exploring how all the rest of the voting public is supposed to be convinced about the raw simple rightness of those points...

That's what's makes me feel old and tired.  We thought McGovern would be the man to take us out of a terrible darkness; turned out we were wrong...and I mean way wrong...when voting time rolled around.  Don't tell me about "deliberate cruelty"; I get that and have for 50 years.  Tell me what your plan is to electorally fix that cruelty now...

so let me put a few solutions on the table:

        1.  End the endless wars NOW.

        2.  Do not expect the most helpless and poor in our nation to pay for these wars, and for what Wall St./the Bankers destroyed (our national economy) to continue to be an excuse to destroy Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

        3.  Deal with the insane Housing Crisis that no one is dealing with.

        4.  Immediately stop the Extended Bush Tax Cuts, NOW.

        5.  Immediately demand that the Corporations pay taxes and stop sending our jobs overseas.

These are the issues, the President Obama and our feckless Democrats refuse to deal with, but why in the hell should the Middle Class and poor keep bailing out the Welfare Queens who stole our entire nation's wealth, and why are we continuing to allow ourselves to bend over and take it?

If you do not think that is cruel, then I feel sorry for you, because I do.

I know who is suffering and it sure as hell isn't the top 1 percent that President Obama and our Democrats keep standing up for.

I think we need to make peace with the fact that there is no finish line.  Greed will always exist and will continue to try and have its day over and over again.  We work to counterbalance it.  To minimize its gains - every once in a while to beat it back for a while.  But it will always regroup and come back at us.

My frustration with badabing and those who share her world view extends far beyond this diary.  You touch on it perfectly by pointing out the habit of calling out the current problems of the day as intolerable and then pointing fingers at our standard bearers for not simply making them go away.  It is the oversimplification and the unwillingness to understand the full scope of the barriers to change that drive me crazy.  Not because they are unfair to the people we vote for, but because the habit of demonizing those we need to support actually hampers their ability to make any moves towards progress.

The first thing I learned when I became responsible for leading others was that being a leader was not simply a matter of picking the good choice and avoiding the bad one.  More often there was no good choice, just bad ones and worse ones.  This is how I see the landscape for the current admin.  it isn't that I think they always do right.  I simply believe that they are doing their best to do the least wrong.

Anyhow - never give up.  I was reminded of an old saying today, "a wise old man plants trees that he will never see shade from."

Keep planting.  And thanks for chiming in.

The fact that no one realized that is the primary reason for the state we're in now.  If we had, we'd have had a solid liberal candidate in place and available for the 1988 Dem nomination--someone well-known and well-liked.  For the life of me, I don't understand why people can't understand what "be like the GOP" means in matters like this.

  •  The two political parties are making decisions on (13+ / 0-)

serious issues for this country WITHOUT considering the wishes of the majority of this country.

"Democracy is a form of government in which all citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the proposal, development and passage of legislation into law."

Can anyone explain to me how this is happening at all at this point?  Don't try, because I won't believe it anyway.

We ARE NOT a democracy.  That's just the bottom line.

    •  Exactly my good friend, are regarless of how many (6+ / 0-)

times, we Kossacks prove that point by show the overwhelming support of all Americans in all parties, that do not want SS, Medicare, or Medicaid touched, that want to tax the rich, and want the wars to end.the endless wars..

      Who the fuck is listening?

None of them are lest of all President Obama and our Democrats.

Our entire nation has gone off the rails, and we keep pretending this is a Democracy.

No one believes that anymore.  So now, here we are back at the point where the Unions in this nation, and the Civil Rights workers, and the people who marched to end the Viet Nam Wars, were doing exactly what we need to do now.

Get off our asses, and show up in huge numbers, so huge, that they can't ignore us, to stop this Oligrachy take over.

I don't see any other way out.

      best to you Al.

    •  The truth is, we *never were* a democracy (6+ / 0-)

The rich and powerful have always been "more equal" than others - originally, quite explicitly so (voting restricted to white male property owners).

We have become "more democratic" at times, and less so (sometimes much less so) at others.

We've been trending "less so" since at least 1980 - and turning it around is going to be a long, slow, difficult process.

        against the wall.

Let us remember this:  We gave President Obama every single opportunity to not cave, on the extended Bush tax cuts, the extension of the endless wars, and to at least pretend to do something about the fucking crooks on Wall St./the Banks and of course the bullshit HCR reform and Financial Reform bills.

He and the other Democrats have now pushed us into the final phase of the Shock Doctrine, and I'm having none of it.

        None of it, period.

  •  This diary is deliberately awesome, Mrs. Bing (7+ / 0-)

You basically rebutted Armando's critique of my diary saying that I was right, but my realistic title was too cruel.

It is destroying the New Deal one goes after the most successful part of it, Social Security. I can't think of anything crueler to seniors who have worked and paid into ti all their lives just to watch idiot Democrats surrender it to idiot Republicans who don't understand that SS doesn't contribute to the deficit. IN truth Republicans probably do understand this, but they know that Democrats accept their dumbass memes about the deficit and debt being out of control and that is simply BS by any standard. Our debt to GDP ratio was 120% at the height of WWII.

So I am not going to be nice about Rubinite BS for utter sellout tactics of Obama(who can't negotiate a debt ceiling raise like every other president) like Kimberly S. said.

The New Deal regulatory framework besides a strained FDIC is gone(the FDIC should get bigger and be bale to receive any institution, have everyone fired, direct access to their books, and then put out back on the market except for this moral hazard BS we accept from our president and his Rubinites) and feckless SEC is almost dead.

What is left this president doesn't have the guts to use(or he really hates to) for real fiscal stimulus which is the only way out of this hole. But more lies and BS about the federal budget being a family budget which make shim look stupid or incredibly corrupt, take your pic.

    Gahh!

    Anyway, thanks, Mrs. Bing.

    •  thank you price so much, because you and slink and (5+ / 0-)

Jo and so many other great true Democrats, and progressives have been proven right, and right and right again over and over again in these past several months.

You all pointed out the warnings, the red flags, the red herrings, and no one would listen to you.  I think about NYeves, and Dallas Doc, and icebergslim, and OPOL, and so many others who had the courage to speak out what we knew was coming, and now, guess what:

HERE IT IS.  Front and center.

I'm not a policy wonk, I'm more of a humanist, but I still get the message.  I can see what is going down and what is happening.

I am absolutely horrified to find our own party still making excuses at this final moment in time to not allow President Obama to cave again, on the final deal, that has always been the soul of our party:

I've never been a vindictive person, because I always felt that being cruel to other people was the opposite of being a true Democrat.  I was never a 'told you so' person was nothing more than 'I'm getting even' instead of being kind to move our party forward.

If we willing stand by and let President Obama destroy not just our party platform, but Social Security, medicare and medicaid, then what is it that people in our own party do not understand, that he and other Democrats are not in fact destroying our party?

That is the only question we should be asking ourselves.

This has been allowed to happen for many years, as to our Unions, and on so many other issues, but it is all being chipped away like it was nothing more than an elaborate 'ice sculpture,' that we are supposed to stand back now and just owe and awe at how perfect it is in the end, when it is nothing more than a big pile of shit, that is nothing different than what the Rethugs and Fake Democrats, are calling 'the New Normal' for the new Banana Republic in our nation.'

What really amazes me Price, is that here we are at the final moment (when these secret back room deals) that Nancy Pelosi has been shut out of and most of our progressives are being decided behind our backs, and still we find our own fellow Kossacks saying that is A OK WITH THEM?

OMFG.  Of course we do not know in the end, yet, how this will all play out, but I am smart enough to know based on this own President's behavior in the past, that even if he does sell Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, piece by piece towards privatization, guess what?

We will still hear apologies and excuses for that too.  You can take that to the Bank, which is exactly who rules our entire nation.

As I always say Price, I wish it were not so, but we'll see what is to come, won't we.  Thanks as always for your support, and I'm so proud of you and slink and Jo today.  You guys rock.  I love you all.
