There are two competing diaries (here and here) on the rec list that get deep and technical into the cuts being proposed to Medicare and Social Security, one analyzing why they wouldn't be so bad, the other analyzing why they would.
Neither diary is on point.
Look, this is real simple. While I do appreciate the push back against the diary that claims the cuts aren't all that bad, no one that calls themselves a progressive should be even talking about any proposed cuts to any social safety net program in the context of "good or bad," the only context that progressives should be talking about such proposals - irrespective of what is actually in the proposals - is "over my dead body."
There is a class war raging in this country, yet some here in their zeal to put lipstick on policy pigs coming from what they perceive as "their side" are helping the wrong side, possibly without even realizing it. Which is why I am writing this.
Nancy Pelosi has precisely the right approach: any proposed cuts to Medicare and Social Security are entirely off the table for House Dems, period. Note that she didn't talk about what the plans were, and whether or not they will have a noticeable impact. She rejected them outright.
If you can't do that too, don't call yourself a progressive.
