Today Michele Bachmann signed Rev Vander Plaats' “The Marriage Vow — A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family". Among other things the pledge implies that Black children born today are worse off than if they had been born into slavery, due to of the higher number of Black families headed by a single parent today.
The Family Leader Presidential Pledge.pdf
Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American president.
The study this false claim is based on was published before Obama even entered the White House, so how they can use it to blame Obama for its findings is a mystery.
Other Republican presidential candidates are being pressured to sign the Family Leader's Pledge.
Michele Bachmann first to sign Bob Vander Plaats' Family Leader gay marriage pledge
Michele Bachmann quickly signed the pledge Thursday, while an aide to to former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said he never signs any pledges. A spokesman for Rep. Ron Paul said the congressman has reservations, while a representative of President Barack Obama’s Democratic campaign committee declined comment.
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is reviewing the pledge, a spokesman said Thursday night. Several other GOP presidential candidates didn’t respond to requests for comment, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and retired Georgia businessman Herman Cain.
This simplistic comparison is an egregious insult to millions of Black families headed by a single parent, to imply that their parenting without a spouse is worse than slavery.
