No this isn't some stupid Carly Anthony (is that her name?) diary. It's about something actually important (so obviously it won't be sensationalized by the media): the Jamie Leigh Jones rape case against KBR. Well the verdict was announced yesterday and I'm surprised that no one has a diary about this yet. A jury determined that she was lying about being raped (despite having had her pectoral "capsule" ripped, requiring two surgeries and 200 psychiatric visits for the resulting PTSD) and the named defendant, Charles Bortz, was found not guilty of rape and KBR was found not guilty of fraud in covering up the incident.
Apparently her motive was all that fame and fortune that, you know, you get from accusing people of raping you.
The trial itself was a bit sketchy, because despite Jones' entire life being scrutinized, jurors were prevented from learning about Bortz's past, which apparently including a history of violence against women. “We respect the jury’s decision based upon the evidence they were allowed to see,” her attorney Todd Kelly said, “but we do think it’s a shame that Jamie’s entire personal history was dragged before the jury when her rapist’s criminal history, including violence against women, was suppressed from them.”
The verdict comes after Al Franken boldly pushed through congress a bill that changed the rule that prevented Jones from bringing charges in court against KBR because her employment contract stipulated that sexual assault allegations would only be heard in private arbitration.
Jones isn't the "perfect accuser" (and the recent DSK incident shows us there rarely are) and there were a lot of holes in her story (see the Mother Jones' article). But I just couldn't fathom someone consuming 5 years of her life lying, and fabricating such a horrible tale for a book deal.
Anyway, a short diary but take a look.
Mother Jones has some in-depth analysis of the story and verdict, as well as why Jones wasn't "the perfect accuser": http://motherjones.com/...
