What Are You Working On is a community diary series for all things crafty and artsy, in a variety of mediums and techniques.
You may volunteer to guest host by signing up at this yahoo group, which I check from time to time. Also by joining this group, you will receive one email a week when the diary is posted. You may also volunteer to host by posting a comment in this diary.
If you click on the WAYWO group, there is a box for the group about 4 boxes down on the right hand side. If you click on the heart in this box, you will "follow" this group and the diary will appear in your "stream."
Simple Flag Cake:
1. Make a double batch of frosting with the base ingredients of 2c crisco and 2 pounds powdered cane sugar.
2. Frost entire 11 x 15 cake top white. While the cake top "dries":
3. Tint two small bowls of frosting: one red, one royal blue. Use copious quantities of dye, even with the small colors you want darker colors.
4. The star background is half the distance across, and just less than half the distance up and down. Make marks in the white frosting with toothpicks or something. Use a ruler to make guidelines for the stripes.
5. Use a spatula to apply the blue frosting to the star field. Use a ribbon tip to make 7 red stripes. You may use two strands if desired.
6. After the blue and red frosting has dried for about an hour, you can pipe stars with a star tip. I tried a couple different ones. The ideal pattern would be 6,5,6,5,6,5,6,5,6 but I was off and had to fill in. There are 50.
7. I used a small star tip for the writing, and I used purchased black frosting. I hoped the star tip would help disguise any shakiness I had. I filled in the exclamation mark with a bit of red sparkle gel.
The cake was made with two boxes of cake mix for this size, and baked for 40 minutes at 325f.
Other Non-Knitting Projects
My son is going to his first overnight camp this week and asked for an eye mask.
I have a beloved tote bag that has holes and I hope to repair the holes (probably with fusible interfacing) and line this bag for future use.
Knitting:
I have no new knitting pictures this week.
Here is Frankenoid's Princess Shawl and with her TV remote:
I wanted to show the detail and scale - the thread is as fine as a sewing thread, and is made of two fibers.
I spied the sock monkeys from the Arts Fest yarn bombing on a street in my neighborhood near my friend Saintless's apartment. I need to go back with a camera in hand.
