I'm sure all of us have been following the terrible tragedy in Norway as a terrorist bomb and shooting attack killed at least 17 people. For most of the day, our "fair and balanced" media have been speculating that was the work of Islamic extremists. But it turns out the attacker was a tall, blond Norwegian national. In fact he is a right wing extremist - more Timothy McVeigh than Mohammed Atta. This is more of a heads-up than a diary, since information on the individual is just beginning to come in.
From the Wikipedia entry on Anders Behring Breivik:
Anders Behring Breivik (born 13 February 1979) is suspected of being the perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks.[1][2][3] On 22 July 2011, he allegedly approached a Labour Party youth camp, posing as a police officer. He then proceeded to open fire on the 13 to 25 year old youth present, reportedly killing at least 10. He has also been linked with the bomb blast that took place approximately two hours earlier, and is now in police custody.
Behring studied at the Oslo Commerce School, and is described by newspaper Verdens Gang as Conservative and nationalist.[3] He is also described as a one-time freemason.[4] He expresses his sympathies for Winston Churchill and Norwegian anti-nazi World War II hero Max Manus on his Facebook profile,[5] He owns the company Breivik Geofarm.[6]
The man is a right-wing fanatic. Chillingly, his last Tweet before committing the murders was a quote from John Stuart Mills:
"One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests."
UPDATE: CANADA's GLOBE AND MAIL REPORTING AT LEAST 80 KILLED. Mostly young people at the Labor Party meeting on the island.
