John Boehner
admits he doesn't yet have the votes to pass his
plan to raise the debt limit, but he says he'll get them by the time it comes up for a vote at around 6:00PM ET this evening.
That means Boehner is going spending his day begging, pleading, and cajoling House Republicans to get the votes he needs to pass a bill that will die an instant death in the Senate, where every single Democrat has said they will reject it.
And that's Boehner's best case scenario.
In Boehner's worst case scenario, his plan will fail, and with it his speakership. It's hard to imagine that happening, but there's a real possibility that it could. According to Think Progress, 23 Republicans have publicly stated opposition to Boehner's bill. The Hill has released a whip list indicating 22 no votes, but 2 of those names aren't on the Think Progress list.
Given that there are 239 Republicans and you need 217 votes for a majority, Boehner has his work cut out for him: he's either going to need to change some votes or win some Democratic support, which Nancy Pelosi said this morning won't happen.
But whatever happens, in no scenario will Boehner's plan end up being the solution for raising the debt limit. Not only have Senate Democrats already rejected it, the White House has issued a veto threat. Bottom-line: it's going nowhere.
