Sugar-coated Satan sandwich ... yum!
The president has spoken. Harry Reid has signed off on the debt ceiling deal. Nancy Pelosi says House Democrats may not support it.
And then there's Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, who called the purported deal "a sugar-coated Satan sandwich" and a "shady bill."
Yesterday, the CBC (minus Rep. Allen West, of course) urged the president to invoke the 14th Amendment:
In a letter to the president, the lawmakers argue that he has "both the authority and a moral obligation" to invoke the Constitution's 14th Amendment "to avoid an economic catastrophe of historic proportions."
"We must not allow a political deadlock to cause the United States to default for the first time in our history," the CBC members wrote. "Now that Congress has borrowed money and incurred debt, we cannot – as a nation and under our Constitution – walk away."
Now that there's a tentative deal, albeit a "shady" one, will Democrats continue to urge the president to invoke the 14th Amendment? Given all the ways Democrats will now be asked to compromise, maybe the president should say, "Screw this," and just raise the damn debt ceiling.
What do you think?
