Usually the hogwash that spill out of Washington is never held accountable. This past month there has been an amount of hogwash over the credit ceiling that was noticeable for its volume and its stench. If this was a usual time, Washington would once again use all types of slippery rhetoric to cover its inability to govern.
But not this time.
The Standard & Poors downrating of this country's credit rating from AAA to AA+ is an unexpected and devastating call of accountability that Washington must answer. No more hiding behind press conferences, no more radio and TV interviews with their usual softball questions and no more pointing the finger at the other party. Democrats and Republicans have an equal share in this crapfest (O.K., the Republicans and its Tea Party contingent have more than an equal share). Standard and Poors has finally called Washington to account for its inability to govern for the sake of those it governs.
Of course, it will be the American taxpayer who will have to pay the bill for Washington's dysfunction. With the credit downgrade the cost of borrowing will go up - for the governement and for everyone. We will pay more for mortgages, cars, loans and college tuitions.
The real question, the only remaining question of substance is whether we will remember in November? When these egotistical power brokers we elected come up for reelection in November 2012, will we remember or will we succumb to their silver tongues and forgive their malfeasance in office by reelecting them?
