I've never been particularly attracted to a man in uniform (except for Captain Jack Harkness, but he's just a character on TV) but somehow have been married twice to former soldiers. I met my first husband shortly after he returned from Vietnam, weighed down by three Purple Hearts. He was a troubled man who eventually became abusive and I had to leave. I don't know what kind of person he was before he went to war, but my fantasy is that time must have damaged him more than just physically. A few years ago, I learned that he died in 2001, at 54.
Mr. susans was in the National Guard. He is enthusiastically pro-military, and though I have always been and continue to be fiercely anti-war, he has helped me to see soldiers in a different way, as individuals rather than mindless drones in the service of The Evil Empire.
Yesterday, he told me about a toy truck rigged to detect IEDs that saved the lives of six soldiers in Afghanistan. It is a simple device that costs about $500 to make. In the years since I have been here (I'm not sure how long since I did not think to register before making my first comment) I've never asked you to send money for anything, but there is a non-profit foundation that is collecting funds to make these things and send them to the troops. Send them a few bucks.
