I've always been a fan of space games, from Elite on the Commodore 64 to the Wing Commander series and beyond. The thought of venturing out in to the unknown for fun and profit has always been appealing to me, and some clever Icelandic folks have turned out a game that speaks directly to that part of the brain.
Explorers and traders, pirates and thugs, grizzled combat pilots and raw recruits, grubby space miners and monied industrialists, this game has something for just about everyone. The world is vast, spanning 7500 star systems, most of which are lawless frontier areas where the only rule is survival. Near the core of the galaxy a tenuous peace is maintained by the navies of the four ruling empires of the Eve universe.
In EVE, you take on the role of one of the elite nigh-immortal space pilots known as capsuleers. From your capsule (known in the game as your pod) you are able to control the systems of a single starship with a speed and coordination unmatched by traditionally crewed vessels. Part rock star and part immortal god, capsuleers are feared and respected across the entire galaxy.
Your life in this game is your own. You can take on any career, follow any path, and learn any skill with no regard for notions like class or race. You can fly any ship with the right skills and enough money, from the miniscule frigate to the kilometers long Titan. You can specialize in combat, mining, salvaging, cargo transport, construction, research, trade, and even commodities brokerage. Nearly every item in the game is made by players leading to a massive and ever changing economy.
Unlike other MMORPGs, skills are learned over time, rather than repetition. All skills are available to all players and can be trained even when you're not actively playing the game. There are no levels and no character classes. If you want to fly combat ships you learn combat ship skills. If you want to haul cargo, you inject the Industrial Ships skill and enjoy your space trucking. You can specialize or do a little bit of everything, and its all up to you.
Sound like the game for you?
If so, please feel free to comment in this diary, join the group, and check out EVE. I run two corporations in game, one of which is currently situated in the calm areas of space, and I'm always willing to help out new players with advice and money.
If you already play EVE, my other corporation is currently in 0.0 space and actively recruiting. We're in a renter alliance and in need of miners and ratters. While we are in the drone regions (yeah, I know) we're in a -0.9 system with and ice belt and upgrades. One of my more gung ho players made 12 billion isk from ratting in the month of June. If you're interested in hearing more, please comment or look up Cefany in game.
