This was the moment when I got into this movement. I was a teenager in the 90s. I was lucky in that there was a great festival in Houston called the Westheimer Arts Festival. This is where I saw the Suspects for the first time;a great third wave ska band still around to this day, though Chris Kendrick was the best singer and he left the band.

Another great Houston ska band is Los Skarnales:

Ok, Now on to one of the most famous third wave ska labels in NY via Moon Ska records. The label was started by Robert "Bucket" Hingley, founding member of The Toasters as a means to distribute albums by The Toasters.

Don't cut it! Protect it! Pick it up!

It was also the start of one of my favorite bands, the Dance Hall Crashers.

Skanking pickle!

Ok everyone! Into lunges!

Mustard Plug!

Spring Heeled Jack!

This band is fun. lol. Satanic ska. Funny stuff.

And a modern third wave band that sounds just like old school ska who are amazing, Hepcat.

So many memories. Enjoy!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I was having kids, working a lot, and listening to a lot Raffi and other kiddie music in the car :)  Well, not all the time.  My kids were early lovers of classic and progressive rock, and still are.

I really like that first song.  To me, it has both a reggae and zydeco sound to it.

I was curious what zydeco means and just looked it up.  :) "The snap beans aren't salty."

Zydeco (French, from the phrase: "Les haricots ne sont pas salés", meaning "the snap beans aren't salty". This phrase is a colloquial expression that means 'times are hard.'

the Slackers, Chris Murray, Let's Go Bowling, the Pietasters, the Pilfers, the New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, Bim Skala Bim, Save Ferris, Five Iron Frenzy, the Aquabats, the Allstonians, Ruder Than You, the Planet Smashers

and some of the other record labels besides Moon, like Asian Man Records (Mike Park of Skankin Pickle and the Bruce Lee Band, plus his own ska/indie music), Too Hep in DC, Raw Energy in Canada, and some of the stuff on Epitaph and its sublabel, Hellcat (Rancid's label, who did some ska-punk in their Operation Ivy days)

And then the most mainstream'd acts, like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish and Rancid (which definitely had a taste for the ska, especially the Life Won't Wait album).

And then the ska-punk bands that had horn sections / ska beats, even as they played it more punk than ska, like Less Than Jake, Goldfinger (early stuff), the Suicide Machines, Catch 22

And then newer acts, that missed the 3rd wave's popularity, but still are putting out great music, like Westbound Train, Big D and the Kid's Table, the Aggrolites

I remember ska from the early 80s.  I had no idea it had seen a revival in the 90s.  Of course, I'm 50 years old, so that may explain things.  The 90s happened after I turned 30, and at that point I ceased to be aware of what was going on in music.

... in the early 80's when I was in college.

At the time I had no idea it was second wave. In Oxford Ohio, the only waves I remember was the heat wave the year I went to summer term.

          •  That pained me to see that exchange (0+ / 0-)

Made me not want to post there for awhile since broadening the PB empire was something I thought would be a positive development and I was involved with that so you have me to blame partly though I think he got a little bit too angry. I like you and Cass and you both have great contributions, especially you, but I guess it's going to get too heated when we're talking about Capitalism(and progressive populism to deal with what it's turned into) versus non Capitalism which is his work as he believes in only the system ending.

It's a shame those discussions went the way they did and I'm sorry that happened.

              •  Yeah, that wasn't right (0+ / 0-)

he should have disagreed with you respectfully, but he didn't. He asked if he could come over to post even if he didn't see himself as a progressive, and I and poligirl didn't see it as a problem, because he does write well, but I had no idea that was going to happen, so I apologize for that.

We have talked about this problem though, and that won't happen again. Disagreement should always be respectful.
