For the past two years I’ve been a citizen journalist of sorts, posting comments on multiple blogs, writing this diary on Kos and yelling at my congressional folk whenever something goes wrong. I’ve studied the policies closely and now have a reading list of at least 35-40 sites per day. I must admit that all of the reading was to destroy republicans during our online debates—but that’s another story.
A month ago, my whole world changed when a representative from Organizing for America asked me to volunteer to do “something” to help this great president get re-elected. I said un-huh and started immediately organizing the African American churches in our county. In less than a month, we have already engaged the African American churches in over 1/3 of our county and have them as fired up as the evangelicals were for Bush. We have found hundreds of volunteers and are organically mobilizing to take our message beyond our county.
Why?
Because Barack Obama is not the problem, we are. We have the power to use our voices, pens and intellect to move people in our direction. We don’t need to push the president to be more progressive, we need to push republicans to find some common sense.
It’s pointless to sit here whining every single day about Obama not doing this or that we're so hurt because he didn't yet pass our specific wish list. Progressives are responsible for the downgrade. Progressives are responsible for the lack of jobs. Progressives are responsible for tea-party intransigence.
Why?
Because we stayed home in 2010!!!
We pouted about the public option and beat this president to a pulp and now we’re mad because we can no longer get 70% of what we want.
Now, I’m asking you a serious favor; stop the whining, stop the infighting, go to your local campaign office and get to work.
And, when we you do get angry, let’s throw your electronic rocks at the tea party—not at the president at least until after the election. It’s time to do something novel for democrats and that is to play smart politics for a full year.
I proudly support this president and I will do every thing I can to get him re-elected.
I implore you to do the same.
Guess what happened when I quit whining and actually did something?
