The Republican attacks on Planned Parenthood programs are somewhat strange: Are they against Planning or against Parenthood? They rail against the rule of law as well. They have been repealing laws they never read and obviously don’t understand—can’t be bothered to move to some “freedom” paragons like Haiti, Somalia or Afghanistan. They don’t like democracy, as shown by their constant suppress the vote efforts. But against Planned Parenthood? A more truthful slogan would be “Republicans for Welfare Babies.”
For its entire history, planning has served this country well. Alternative examples such as “freedom” countries mentioned above abound. As far back as the 1700’s, Malthus explained in dire terms how overpopulation caused serious problems for all those living. Its seems eminently reasonable to me for any responsible government to educate its citizens about sex and the dangers of population pressures. And provide them with lawful choices which lend themselves towards planning and lowering population growth. After all, there is only a certain amount of land and the more people in it, the more crowded the land becomes. No political system will change that.
Any responsible parent must be educated enough and disciplined enough to make choices. And it seems the first choice would be whether they are financially or emotionally able to have a child. Gives the children better chances for success. The Welfare Mom problem was a good example. Its not exactly fair for the rest of us to pay for a crack head’s one, two, five or ten kids. And that’s the sort of “parenting” planned parenthood tries to avoid.
As to abortion? Its only a small portion of Planned Parenthood’s work. Laws cannot prevent an act or conduct. They can only provide guidance and ways to deal with the situation once the act to which the law applies occurs. In fact, people were always having abortions. The criminalize abortion laws merely meant those having abortions did so at great risk to themselves and their health. The history has been much forgotten. But the medical profession of the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s dealt with thousands of ruined young women, seriously injured by back room abortions. Making abortions illegal will bring back those bad days. And I’m pretty very of forcing a raped kid to have a child against her will.
According to the Bible, people don’t count as people to they reach the age of one month. Numbers 3, Verse 40. If the Republicans oppose abortion on moral grounds, they cannot do so based on the Bible. Because according to the Bible, life does not count at quickening. If it did, the census would have listed all pregnant women as 2 individuals.
And those libertarians? One hears them talking about freedom a lot. But it seem pretty obvious that their really concern is only with their own freedom. They’ve no problem telling others what to do. First, they’ll tell you they are not one of the nutters. Then they’ll spew some story about how some clerk would not do what they wanted or made them wait in line for others. Any real “libertarian” who believes in maximizing personal freedom would support laws protecting a woman’s right to choose. After all, it’s her freedom at issue. And sad someone else who does not know her or her problems that have lead her to a difficult choice would presume to force her into a bad situation. Its curious to hear self described Libertarians rail against Abortion. Or just enact laws making it nigh impossible. So much for freedom.
Denial and scapegoating has been the Republican’s milk. Still, it’s somewhat sad to see them go after rules designed to “plan” and prevent the growing problems of overpopulation and welfare babies. The attacks on Planned Parenthood are poorly reasoned and illogical for these reasons among others.
