The Daily Bucket is a place to catch your casual observations of the natural world and turn them into a valuable resource. Whether it's the first flowers of spring or that odd bug in your basement, don't be afraid to toss your thoughts into the bucket. Check here for a more complete description.
Seattle. August 13, 2011.
This morning the wind came out of the south, not much but cool in the sunshine.
Our conifers are bearing well this summer. The branches on the Western Red Cedar in the back yard are drooping with their load of small green cones. I've never paid much attention to its cycles, but will watch more closely this year. Spent a bit of time picking up Douglas Fir cones from the front walkway. These ripened last summer, overwintered and have been falling since early summer. There were a few not-quite-ripe cones from this season, but only a few.
A wedge of Canada Geese flew over the house as the light faded, calling back and forth. This year's kids are flying well now and the local flocks have begun to graze away from the lake, sometimes up in the fields above the dog-park. Their route this evening would have taken them back to shoreline.
The breeze is chill again this evening. That and the geese make me think of autumn, though August is still midummer.
