Today it was announced that the Maine Secretary of State's Office approved for circulation a citizens initiative that would ask Mainers to approve same-sex marriage in Maine.
If enough signatures are gathered, An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom would first be considered by the Maine Legislature, and if they do not pass to enact it, it would be placed on the November 2012 ballot. A little more than 57,000 signatures of registered Maine voters are required.
The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition has formed a ballot question committee, Dirigo Family PAC, to raise money and coordinate staff and volunteers for the canvassing effort. The group plans to collect at least 80,000 signatures by January 2012.
You can read the draft legislation at the link below (thanks to the Sec. of State's Office for sending it). A quick comparison of the draft to LD1020, the law allowing same-sex couples to marry that was repealed by a people's veto in 2009, finds the two very similar.
