I see an irrational conflation of the criticisms leveled at the administration from the ideological Left and Right sides a lot here. The two could hardly be substantively more different, yet criticisms from the Left are illogically lumped in with those from the other side and the charge made that those criticisms from the left are "Right wing" as if it is only possible to object to an ideological or political stance from one side.
It is of course just an emotional ad hominem with no basis in fact, but it seems to consistently find a home in the diaries and comments here. It is also a disheartening reminder that widespread closed mindedness isn't the sole province of any particular ideological territory.
The impulse to "circle the wagons" and pull together behind a charismatic leader or leadership group is one that is based on top down hierarchical and authoritarian modes of thought more at home in Right wing ideology than in modern pluralistic liberalism where a consensus is constantly being negotiated between presumptively equal group members by frank and open dialog. This top down hierarchical thinking process is in fact nurtured in intrinsically conservative nondemocratic institutions where power inevitably flows downward from the top, institutions like private businesses, the military and traditional religious organizations and is thus fundamentally illiberal. As such, I'd rate unconditional defense of any leader or leadership authority to be to a large degree a Right wing impulse.
I hope the irony of categorically labeling any criticism of a leader as "Right wing" on a putatively liberal site isn't lost on us here. It doesn't reflect well on either our intellectual honesty or our adherence to liberal thought and traditions.
Let's discuss in the true liberal spirit.
