On Thursday a group of four unemployed constituents of Congressman Paul Ryan entered his Congressional office in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Rochester Citizen spoke to Shanon Molina, one of Ryan’s unemployed constituents on Saturday afternoon to get an update on the situation in Kenosha. The sit-in continued on Friday. Molina said that on Friday there were as many as nine or ten people occupying Congressman Ryan’s office. They remained in Ryan’s office until approximately 4:20 p.m. Ryan’s constituents tried to get Ryan’s staff to keep the office open. After Ryan’s staff insisted a fourth time the constituents decided to leave Ryan’s office, informing the staff that they would be back on Monday morning. The police were not called on Friday afternoon. On Thursday Ryan’s office did call the police and the police removed the Ryan’s constituents from the office but did not arrest them.
Molina said the group intends to return every day until they find a job or Congressman Ryan agrees to meet with his constituents without charging fifteen dollars.
Ryan is vacationing in Colorado with his family and so far has refused to meet with his unemployed constituents that are camping out in his Kenosha office. He did send a letter stating his position.
In his letter he states that he continues to hold telephone town hall meeting a delivering speeches at area events. However, since he faced hecklers over his budget and efforts to turn Medicare into a voucher system that would require seniors to pay up to $6000 out of pocket at current prices to obtain private insurance, Ryan has not held any live town hall meetings and his only planned appearance is with the Whitnall Park Rotary Club on September 6th, a meeting that is open to the public, but there is a $15 fee to attend and purchase lunch. The Whitnall Park Rotary Club has put a statement on its web site that the meeting is not a town hall meeting and pre-registration is required on the Rotary Club’s web site to gain admittance.
