WASHINGTON -- No promises that he'll join a chorus of "Solidarity Forever," but President Barack Obama is headed to Detroit to speak to thousands of union members for Labor Day celebrations.
Metro Detroit AFL-CIO President Saundra Williams said Obama's visit could result in more than 100,000 people participating in the annual Michigan AFL-CIO Labor Day Parade and its associated activities -- nearly twice the typical crowd.
"We're always ready for the president to join us, and we're very pleased that he's coming this year," Williams said.
The President has always had his own unique sense of timing. Coming out of the August recess I believe that we will see more offense in his game and kicking off by speaking to 100,000 union members is a good place to start.
The President has never gotten, in my opinion, proper credit for saving Chrysler and GM and the hundreds of thousands - if not millions of jobs dependent on these two great American companies.
But some people have noticed:
Rep. Gary Peters, a Democrat from Bloomfield Township, praised Obama for his "bold decision to stand up for American workers and our American auto industry," saying in a statement that "while we have a lot more work to do, we're now creating new auto jobs here in southeast Michigan."
Governor Synder, ever eager to stave off the torches and pitchforks was humbly conciliatory in his press release....
Sara Wurfel, a spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Snyder, said Snyder "welcomes the president to Michigan with one of the best, most talented work forces in the country," and that he hopes Obama "gets to see and experience first-hand why Michigan is the value place to work, live and do business."
All in all I think this is great news, as it demonstrates, I believe that the President thinks he has made his point: that he is the adult in the room after moving to the center and forcing the 'thugligans so far to the right that he can comfortably do things like move towards his base and allow the EPA to hire the unemployed...and the public will hear the howling of Boehner and Co. as what is it: the ravings of a Confederacy of Dunces.
10:58 AM PT: Hey, thank you all! Thanks for the rec list! Thought I'd never get kicked up!
