Well, it's been a day so far. No, make that two days counting yesterday's prep work and more today. But we, Persiflage and I, are secured as best as can be, and the nasty bands are hitting us now. We lost power for 45 minutes earlier but it's back, for however long. So I thought I'd tell you about it and how it feels and seems to us. Scary would be a good start. You know the drill, under the lovely squiggly and such.
To begin with, this week has been a roller coaster ride... will it hit, nah, oops, looks like it will, nah, yep. Okey dokey then, prep work is on.
I NEVER knew we had so much crap in our yard. Besides potted plants I'm talking yard art... you know those cute little thingies you just have to have in your yard. They are tucked in now. Then there are the potted plants and hanging ferns. Gone. Put away.
Then you focus on protecting your home. F word involved during this process. My husband was on a really high ladder, on our roof, boarding up a window. That was after he boarded up those he could reach without that really tall ladder. By the way, I was his lovely assistant Nan, helping tote the big ass ladder and then holding on to it for dear life while he was on the roof. Dropped the F bomb again at this point. Once I got my heart out of my throat, when he was safely down, I checked to be sure I hadn't broken a nail. Had that happened I would have had to evacuate to higher ground for an immediate repair. That was snark if you didn't notice.
After securing our home I was off to my folks' to be sure they were good to go. We had talked about all of it and I figured they would have what they needed to hang out for a few days but had to go and be sure. I helped Mom secure their patio, checked the bottled water, ice and was on my way.
Persiflage and I arrived home about the same time, he with our generator that pooped six weeks ago and took the good ole boys repairing it that long. We have it now, finally, and likely will be putting it to use soon.
Right now the wind is very gusty, torrential rains are intermittant, and it is getting dark. I'm not looking forward to the night, when the worst will come. But we are ready.
As I write this things are "thunking" on our roof and we have lost a tree. I figure that doesn't bode well this early but it is what it is.
In Wilmington, NC, our home is located 24 feet above sea level which is a Godsend. Storm surge is likely to be 12 to 14 feet and on top of high tide that is gonna be a nasty one.
So, we prepped and are hunkered down and already I am sick and tired of the wind, which hasn't really cranked up yet, but I am thankful for the restoration of power, for however long.
We're hanging tough and wish everyone safety and NYC, don't be macho. This is a big bad booger of a storm.
