Namaste TWiUPians isn’t that an interesting little nugget.  According to MUFON the Mutual UFO Network the largest private UFO tracking organization in the world more people are reporting UFOs during the Obama Administration.  MUFON has a very cool reporting system where you can leave your written impressions, upload any videos or photographs captured, and it has a “tracker” that displays the reports obtained in real time.

"Over the past year, we've been averaging 500 sighting reports a month, compared to about 300 three years ago [67 percent]," MUFON international director Clifford Clift said.

"And I get one or two production companies contacting me every week, wanting to do stories on UFOs."

I haven’t taken the time to find out if UFO sightings increase in Democratic administrations, but I don’t know.  I seem to recall the President making some pointy UFO jokes at Donald Trump.  Come to think of it he liked making an I’m from Krypton and my father is actually Jor-El joke before too.

I will never hide the truth because it’s uncomfortable. I will deal with Congress and the courts as co-equal branches of government. I will tell the American people what I know and don’t know, and when I release something publicly or keep something secret, I will tell you why.  President Barack Obama, National Archives, May 21, 2009

Hey want to see me criticize the President?  You know you want to.  Release the UFO files Mr. President and the next time a citizen asks your representative a question about the subject make sure he has a real answer outside of I don’t know and some vague promise of transparency.

Let’s take the jump on this post but don’t come down on it, that could be painful.

Last week the obvious excitement around our country at least surrounded hurricane Irene, and there were a couple of interesting sightings surrounding the hurricane.  Normally I would have put the videos of the events in the regular YouTube round-up, but I thought they were interesting enough to stand out a bit.

Now apparently there is something that darts across the screen, personally I’m sort of meh on that one.

These are more interesting, but then again I really enjoy listening to the people watch these things.  This sighting was caught by multiple witnesses and angles with the fairly standard of late explanation of Chinese lanterns.  Plausible as always, but I do think it’s an interesting time to launch such things in a hurricane, but hey I was young and dumb once too.

Now on Sunday I posted this video in the ole tip jar cause we don’t do no stinking auto jar on TWiUP.  At any rate a very plausible explanation for what it was has come out.

The Peruvian military for several days have been actively seeking a "space object" that crashed in the difficult to access outskirts of the Cusco city. The comments of the national mass media noted that the "object" was a large meteorite or "extraterrestrial device" (UFO). For this region of Peru, as well as for the entire zone of the Andes Mountains, the emergence of "unidentified flying objects" is a frequent phenomenon, but the present case is remarkable in the fact that it was accompanied by strange sound and light effects. Thousands of people saw the fall of the "UFO". "This has never happened before, - said one of the witnesses, - many of us were panic-stricken." That is why the mountain-wooded neighborhood of Cusco has been examined by military helicopters and commandos units.

But there is another reason for the deployment of intensive search of a suspicious space object. The Peruvian authorities have been warned by a "certain friendly government" that "most likely" the debris of the space truck "Progress M-12M" have dropped on the territory of the country. It was launched from Baikonur on August 24 this year, but, due to the reasons that have not yet been clarified, the truck never made for the desired orbit. The attempts to find fragments of "Progress" in the Altai Mountains have been unsuccessful. A "meteorite", which caused so much noise in Peru, was recorded on August 25, and its trajectory, according to Peruvian experts, was virtually identical to the approach trajectory of the cargo spacecraft to the ISS. It may be noted that the fall of the "Shuttle" in the U.S. in 2003 was accompanied by exactly the same visual and audio phenomena as the mysterious "Peruvian Meteor".

Real bummer about the Progress they may have to abandon the ISS over that.

While I have my explainers cap on there was also an explanation for the one formation that was featured in last weeks crop circle presentation of a big deal in China. Official explanation is that it was a marketing campaign for BMW.

Let’s finish off the written presentation with an abstract from a neat article.

How do we define intelligence? SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, clearly equates intelligence with technology (or, more precisely, the building of radio or laser beacons). Some, such as the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov, suggested that intelligence wasn’t just the acquisition of technology, but the ability to develop and improve it, integrating it into our society.

By that definition, a dolphin, lacking limbs to create and manipulate complex tools, cannot possibly be described as intelligent. It’s easy to see why such definitions prove popular; we are clearly the smartest creatures on the planet, and the only species with technology. It may be human hubris, or some kind of anthropocentric bias that we find difficult to escape from, but our adherence to this definition narrows the phase space in which we’re willing to search for intelligent life.

Technology is certainly linked to intelligence – you need to be smart to build a computer or an aircraft or a radio telescope – but technology does not define intelligence. It is just a manifestation of it, perhaps one of many.

Snip

By escaping the assumption that intelligence must equal technology, we see that there are many other intelligences on Earth – ask Lori Marino, and she’ll tell you that even the simplest multi-cellular life could be considered intelligent to a degree, thanks to its nervous system.

But it also poses a problem for SETI – if the Universe is full of intelligent, social, communicative but non-technological dolphins and the like, then there will be no radio beacons to transmit signals. The Universe could be full of life, of intelligence, and we would never know it.

The Week in YouTube

Make sure to check out the first one from Kansas City.  It's caused a bit of a stir too.  HMMM!  As the stinking player with all the videos won't embed I've placed all the videos in a comment.  Here is the one from KC at least.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
