I came across a Guardian article about David Hare. According to the Guardian, Hare is a successful playwright who writes about the political spectrum. Hare has written plays about the failure of institutions: Anglican Church, Labour party, the British Legal system and in a play called "Pravda" written in 1985 hit the Murdoch press.
The Guardian article paints a picture of a man who is confounded by the current events and that says a lot about where we are in the western world.
Hare:
"This feels like one of those moments when everything's changing, and changing because of the double blackmail of the banks.
Continued over the power squiggle.
"The first blackmail was when the banks said: 'We have destroyed the economy but you have to bail us out.' The second blackmail now is the banks saying: 'We have to continue in the same way we did before which destroyed the economy,' and we have such a weak government that they believe the City of London must be appeased."
Hare again:
"We have a generation of leaders – Merkel, Sarkozy, Obama, Cameron – who don't seem to have the faintest idea of what they're doing. Politics is now nothing more than people saying hopeful things with their fingers crossed.
Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor are men pushing a failed theory. A theory that has lead to were we are today. Are they doing it with their fingers crossed or are they doing it as true believers thinking that surely next time it will work? Or as I believe, are they doing it because they have very deep pocket backers who will give them the world whether they succeed or fail.
Iceberslim's diary containing that marvelous video of Morning Joke Rick Perry slammed gives a picture of regular repugs nonplussed by their own success in moving the party to the crazy side. And Joe sounds like a true believer "if only we did it in a pure fashion" kind of believer as he slams Bush.
But how to explain President Obama? He doesn't seem like the finger crossing kind nor does Merkel for that matter. So why are these leaders pursuing draconian austerity programs when draconian austerity programs are so NOT going to work? Is it group think? Is it group think combined with having deep pocket backers? How frustrating it is to think that these folks think their actions are okay because they refuse to look at the dire consequences they are setting up for the future. Ryan and Cantor are pestiferous, but our leaders at the top are going to be the ones who live in history with ignominy all over them imho.
This man speaks to me of my own dilemma:
"I'm 63, but this is exactly how I feel about myself now. I don't understand the rules." Surely, you don't feel insecure socialising? "I do, actually. I spend so much time alone at parties thinking, 'Is everybody else failing to understand the way of the world, or is it just me?'
I have been so wrapped up in the political world that my kids are trying to shush me. I go to protests and wonder why 10000 people are not there with me.
But it is my hope, seeing the nurses tackling their reps, seeing constituents tackling their reps, seeing the unions tackling the assumption that they will support dems even if dems don't support them, seeing the black caucus stepping out with questions, seeing WI prevail in so many areas even as Scotty is still trying to strip the veneer off of civilization there - it is my hope that people are beginning to push back and come out of hiding to push back even more. I have my fingers crossed.
