This isn't snark, I actually can't really tell anymore. They both endorse deregulating to promote growth. They both endorse extending the Bush tax cuts. They both think deficit reduction is paramount. According to the right, Romney is pro-choice. Obama re-appointed Ben Bernanke, a conservative Republican, to the Fed chairmanship. Does it seem like Romney would have made a different choice? Romney wants to repeal "Obamacare," which is basically a nationalized version of "Romneycare."
What's the difference? I see lots of style difference--Obama "reads" like a Democrat while Romney "reads" more like the GOP. But that's just packaging. Can anyone describe the substantive differences?
Because otherwise, if Romney gets the nod, i think it might be good strategy to break the habits of a lifetime and vote GOP
Right now, we have a Democrat who either through inclination or political miscalculation or lack of options, or some combination of the three, moves continually to the right., The litany of complaints is familiar--the pre-conceding, the willingness to grant the GOP's talking points, the unwillingness to defend the progressive agenda, the hippie-punching.
Having an enemy--Bush--in the White House was great for the Dems. We just elected the wrong guy.
If Romney is substantively indistinguishable from Obama--which seems to be the case--would progressives be better off as the opposition party, rather than as the punching bag of the DLC core?
I'm leaning yes, and though I've never voted for a GOP candidate in my life, I'm thinking it might be a better choice
1:48 PM PT: Interesting--the vast majority responded just by calling me a troll. I'm not. I'm a history professor at a VA state university and a life long liberal, raised by old fashioned, pro union liberal catholics, a nearly extinct species now.
I got no substantive responses, just obscenities and "troll." You can do this--keep sticking your heads in the sand and calling troll. And watch the country move farther to the right.
The only substantive answer I got was that Romney would appoint another Alito or Scalia. It might be true--I'm not sure. LIke Obama, Romney claims to be above partisanship.
But as far as I can tell, the only reason--the sole reason--anyone offered fro distinguishing Romney from Obama is that Romney might appoint right wing extremists to the bench.
Does that not bother any of you?
