If you wanted to know how the Republicans really feel about bringing America out of its unemployment crisis, look no further than the disgrace my area has been subjected to since Tom DeLay's gerrymander of the early 2000s-- Pete Sessions (TX-32).
On his taxpayer-supported web site, Sessions provided no good reason why he is against President Obama's jobs bill. Instead, he resorts to a code term-coated press release signaling his determination to fight the bill because it demands sacrifice from the millionaires and billionaires Sessions insists on protecting at the expense of everyone else.
More below.
Here's part of what Sessions says in his press release:
“After our economy created zero new jobs in August, the American people demand and deserve for Washington to get serious about addressing our nation’s unemployment crisis. Unfortunately, President Obama used another speech to once again promote more of the same failed ‘Stimulus’ policies that the American people soundly rejected last November. To make matters worse, the President’s spending plan would take more money directly out of the hands of American job creators.
“Since January, House Republicans have passed 11 bills that could immediately help spur job creation, but have been stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate. This fall, we will continue to build on pro-growth and regulatory-relief initiatives as outlined in our Plan for America’s Job Creators to create jobs and grow the economy. Removing job-destroying regulations and pursuing pro-growth tax relief will relieve businesses of increasing costs that are stunting growth and preventing job creation.
Notice how Sessions talks about "taking money away from" so-called "job creators." Let's call this for what it is-- double talk. What Sessions is really talking about is the richest 1 percent-- the millionaires and billionaires whose tax cuts Sessions wants to protect even if seniors are denied health care or needed roads or schools are not built.
What Sessions is really saying is he doesn't really want to create jobs for America because it may help the president win re-election. In addition, he is signaling once again that his loyalty to
Grover Norquistand the no-tax-hike-for-anyone-even-if-necessary pledge is more important than his loyalty to those in his district he is supposed to be serving.
Pete Sessions may say he is a conservative, but contrary to the image he has presented to folks in my district, he is one of America's most financially reckless and irresponsible legislators because he refuses to do the obvious right thing and make sure those who have made out like bandits during our financial crisis pay their fair share and help our nation out of the financial mess that he helped George W. Bush create when Republicans controlled the Congress AND White House during the last decade.
And this latest press release further proves that Pete Sessions is only interested in putting his ideological interests above the interests of our nation and his own district. His defeat by voters is long overdue, and I hope Sessions gets a strong opponent who will force him to account for his continued political malpractice against our country and folks in his district.
