As has previously been posted, I am sick of the coverage around 9/11. I however have a slightly different take on the reasons behind the coverage.
More below the fold
I am watching the coverage around the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with a mounting sense of disgust.
Over and over again, I watch planes slam into the twin towers, in high definition. In half an hours time on CNN, I kept count as the footage of the towers being brought down was played repeatedly. Eighteen times in thirty minutes.
Don't get me wrong, 9/11 was a tragedy. A man made disaster of epic proportions that claimed over five thousand lives in a single hour.
Our nations reaction to it however, was wrong. Wrong on just about every level. We were attacked by a scattered group of disparate individuals who succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. America's reaction to this horrible crime was two endless wars, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. We as citizens allowed laws designed to strip away rights guaranteed to us in the constitution. The patriot act, warrentless wiretapping, torture and the list goes on. Trillions of dollars spent overseas on two badly planned, poorly executed and financially disastrous foreign adventures.
Thanks to our tutelage, starting in the eighties, a disparate group has morphed into a battle hardened cause with subsidiaries all over the world. We have failed. Net result is that we are less secure then we were ten years ago.
I am sick of it. The media talks about people forgetting. Humans are designed to forget a traumatic experience. The media will not let us forget. We are constantly reminded of this horrific experience. We are not allowed to put it behind us. 9/11 is used as an excuse to murder beyond our borders without consequence, without mercy and without end. 9/11 is used as an excuse to beggar our working and middle class at home and declare wars without end. It is used as an excuse for a build up in the military industrial complex, that will lead to a Soviet style collapse that will be uniquely American. This is not sustainable, we cannot cut taxes, wage two wars and endlessly bail out our financial sector without dire consequences.
I for one, am sick of this shit.
