I cut back a bit on my dKos reading for a couple days (heck...I didn't even go away) and now the whole site is boycott, boycott, boycott.
So I sit down to read the boycott diaries. What I get is an awful lot of heat and not much light. Lots of statements of solidarity, with virtually no sense of the whys of this movement.
Finally I stumble upon a couple diaries that make some accusations of "disparate impact" without really solid evidence.
Unlike a number of the boycotters (among many others), I've never called for more moderation of this site. I'm pretty much a free speech absolutist. And I've always felt that the HR system, however imperfect, does an adequate job of eliminating the few actual trolls. In fact, I think this boycott is a pretty good indication of why additional moderation creates more problems than it solves.
As to the specifics of the case: I honestly have no opinion. And given the number of diaries that I've read about the boycott, it's kind of sad that I feel that I don't.
The first duty of a democratic political movement is to make its case to its potential constitutuency. This movement seems unfortunately satisfied with preaching to the converted.
My refusal to boycott is not an endorsement of the purge--which I don't much like, regardless of any disparate impact--let alone of the purging any specific Kossacks of any race, creed, or color.
But since I'm not at all convinced that any particular injustice has taken place or that a boycott would help solve anything if it has, I'm staying put.
