Just don't ask me to govern
I really don't think there's anything Republicans won't do, as long as it distracts from any attempt to, you know, actually
help govern the country.
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) wants to bring President Obama's uncle, Onyango Obama, before Congress to testify on whether he received preferential treatment after he was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
"We have to bring drunken 'Uncle Omar' in front of the House Judiciary Committee, drill down into this, and tell America what's going on," King told Fox News, referring to Obama's uncle, who is in the country illegally.
Yeah! Now we're legislatin' and stuff!
Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Steve King would not be interested in "Uncle Omar" if he was "Uncle Bob" or "Uncle Steve." Like Peter King, Steve King seems primarily animated by thoughts of scary ethic-sounding people, and having the president of the United States have some rough association with a scary ethnic-sounding person is the sort of thing that gets Republican congressthings out of bed in the morning.
Yes, let's have hearings over every politician's drunk-ass uncles: I would love to see it. I want to see politicians held responsible for their anti-Semitic fathers, or racist brothers, or money-embezzling cousins: Why the hell not? Congress has long ceased to be capable of accomplishing anything of substance, so the least they can do is entertain us. It could be like a speech-heavy version of Jersey Shore, but the cast would consist of 500 or so crazy people instead of just a dozen.
He also took a shot at Obama's aunt, who was granted asylum in the country by a Republican-appointed immigration judge because her immigration status was leaked just ahead of the 2008 presidential election.
"I watched as President Obama's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, also evaded [Immigration and Customs Enforcement]," King said. "The sympathy, the bleeding heart, of [Department of Homeland Security Director] Janet Napolitano decided to use an administrative authority to grant President Obama's aunt asylum."
Damn Republican judges, giving people asylum just because they're being attacked by Republicans over their associations with non-Republicans, or whatever the hell we're going for at this point. I can't even keep track.
I don't have much to say about Steve King, other than to note that he fancies himself a patriot or something. The current crop of Republican congressmen seem to look to the McCarthy era as the high point of government, and seem to spend every waking moment deciding how best to use their congressional positions to propagandize against, and demonize, any group or individual that crosses his path. Gay people, brown people, liberals, scary invisible communists that hide under your bed and come out at night to rearrange the eggs in your refrigerator: If Steve King was not a congressman, how on earth would he spend his time?
