Moving Planet is a worldwide rally to demand solutions to the climate crisis taking place on Saturday, September 24th 2011—a single day to help move the world beyond fossil fuels.
With over 2000 events in 150+ countries (find one near you at http://www.moving-planet.org/...), and a flagship parade and rally in San Francisco, its an opportunity to shift the national and global dialog. Excuse my presumption, but IMHO, the planet is calling YOU to come, can you hear it? “Be there, show the world and the nation, the issue is real and that you care, about me”.
If the numbers attending are big enough, I'd offer, its potentially the beginning of the political sea change we have been looking for. Obama needs you. He needs political cover to take action against the Tar Sands “Pipeline-to-Hell” and a big turnout Sept. 24th could really help. The planet says, “Would you come, at least this once, please”.
Just get Moving Planet’s Goals/Demands:
- Science-based policies to get us back to 350ppm
- A rapid, just transition to zero carbon emissions.
- Mobilizing funding for a fair transition to a 350ppm world.
- Lifting the rights of people over the rights of polluters.
Hold Obama accountable: come and call for him to implement science-based policies, as he promised. Give him the support in the steets. The planet says, “Stand for wise policies, please”.
Don't forget the 24 Hours of (Climate Change) Reality tonight!
This rally is the one for impressive numbers. The Civil Rights movement and the Environmental movement itself became societal mandates with mass demonstrations. There has never been a better and more vital time for those concerned for our planet to make a showing of our strength in numbers and conviction. Where Tea Party rallies get coverage for a pitiful few who they gather for anti-tax rhetoric, a showing of large magnitudes at Moving Planet events will put Climate Change back in the national dialog with a positive light. The planet says, "Bring many, please.”
Scientists, and thus, we have known for 20 years. Why has the number of Americans “believing” that humans have induced climate change gone down? One answer is that Climate Change has been swept aside (or over) by economic concerns (per the Maslow Hierarchy: for example: "can't plan the future if you can't get a meal"). But just as the dire environmental repercussions of nuclear power has come to light and virtually halted its future, so could the Thermogeddon/thermal hell of climate change danger become real enough to enough people, and so put it again on the national dialog stage. Hence, sheer numbers are needed: yourself and as many family, friends and acquaintances as you can muster. The planet says, "Hurry, a week from Saturday, please!”.
This could be one of the biggest rallies, just as the recent anti-Tar Sands Pipelinecivil disobedience action at the White House was the biggest such climate change environmental action. 350.org has organized with 70 global partners (including Greenpeace, MoveOn.org, Oxfam, and the World Council of Churches ) and thousands of local ones. The planet says, “All together, please”.
If Obama can’t or won’t stand up to oil and polluting interests, from my perspective, he, and the rest of the nation needs to be reminded that many of us believe in science, believe what it tells us, believe we are smart enough as a society, and believe that if enough of us make a stand, our society will change, and believe Mr. Obama can therefore make the change he so promised us, that the seas will not continue to rise. The planet says, “Leave any skepticism and pessimism behind for one day. Believe, and come, please.”
