President Obama will present today at 2:30pmEDT the Medal of Honor to Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CSPAN. I have pasted in, with his permission, an email from a friend of mine who has had the chance to spend time with this brave Marine.
The President's presentation of the Congressional Medal of Honor to Sgt. Dakota Meyer, USMC, will take place today, Thursday, at 230PM Eastern Time at the White House. It will at least be on C-SPAN, perhaps other networks. if you can, I recommend watching it: what he did in Afghanistan was incredible.
He is also an extraordinary person in general. I've gotten to know him over the past year (before the award nomination) and was surprised when he invited me to attend the award ceremony tomorrow. Needless to say, looking forward to it.
If you read any of the Google results on Dakota, you will find he is, understandably, conflicted about this attention on "the worst day in (his) life", but is also dedicated to using the recognition to promote support of the families, particularly the children, of fallen Marines.
If you watch the ceremony, bear in mind that Sgt Meyer's achievements happened to have sufficient witnesses to fulfill the rigorous requirements of the Medal of Honor. How many more soldiers and Marines have done as much or more but with no one to record their valor?
Worth all of us thinking about.
