Well, in fourteen months we'll be electing a President. And apparently, the Republicans already are embracing free speech in a way only they could.
So said a sign my parents put up for me eight days ago. We thought that it would be productive to play by the rules of the Teabaggers, who seem in my area to have provocative and frequently-racist signs up the whole year, but to use reason and plea, instead of the shouting frenzy of the Teabag Patrol. (And secretly, we hoped we wouldn't have nails in our driveway like we did the last two elections, as did many other Democrats.
Well, so far, no news on the nail front. Vandalism, though...
Now, before I'm called childish or thin-skinned, I'm not particularly angry about the sign- either way, I'll probably replace it. What I am angry about, and am writing about, is the immaturity of the Teabaggers who proclaim "our free speech is being taken away! Socialism, fascism!" every time that they're criticised. Clearly, someone of their moral imperative has vandalized this sign, not because it lies or defames, as so often theirs do, but because my sign offends their narrow mindset and makes the wild misdemeanor of differing from it.
It has been said many times that Americans have been blessed with the right to post signs that proclaim their opinions, however wrongheaded. There is a faction among us in America, however, who want that right for only themselves.
