Update 7: 2:00AM EST
Can't tell whats going on from Twitter or Livestream right now. Last I saw them, they were sitting at one of the barricades. No word of any trouble right now.
Update 6: 12AM EST New York City
Around 200 of the protesters just have had a silent candlelight march around Wall Street (I think the actual NY Stock exchange building.) that was barricaded for the weekend. They are now sitting in front of one of the barricades peacefully.
It was very moving to see them in action.
Having watched the Occupywallstreet Protesters all day, I have nothing but admiration for these folks.
One of the things that the livestream has shown, is the sheer hard work and determination it takes to pull off these protests. This group is particularly well organized and using their collective power, intelligence and passion with democratic fundamentals that reminds of what democracy is suppose to be. Its frustrating, messy, and sometimes infuriating, but it works.
They are using the social media as effectively as possible despite electricity being turned off yesterday. The livestream is maintained by a dedicated group of people who are doing their level best to document the whole movement. They have people from all over the world providing assistance and funding.
They have setup several groups to coordinate essentials like food, sleeping arrangements, medical, custodial/cleanup crews and committees to establish their goals.
They are careful to negotiate with all parties they come in contact with (like the owner of the park that they are occupying) to prevent more adversary and are gaining more and more community support because of their approach.
They have put up a list of local merchants to support those merchants as well as themselves.
They formed committees for outreach to appeal to the surrounding areas for more support.
Every time the police throw up another kind of barrier, they find a way to get around it to achieve their goal in a legal way. Example: They aren't permitted to use the megaphone at night, so they use "the peoples' megaphone" which is everyone around the speaker repeating whats being said so that everyone can hear. All legal, tiring for them but legal and effective.
Another thing I noticed is that they are careful not to initiate any kind of hostility toward the police and avoid and instigations thrown there way. AND they keep reminding the police that they are fighting for them and their families too. I don't know if the police are being reasonable on their own or maybe Bloomberg is restraining them, but during the march, they followed them, but did not block the flow of marchers except for the barricades around Wall Street itself. Bought and paid for by those financiers I'm sure.
