Here is a rundown of what happens (I have a hard time hearing some of it).
The Video Blogger known as AreYouSurprised has been video blogging about being gay in the military for a while (never showing his face). Here he starts out saying how he can't sleep, it is the morning of September 20th and he is calling his dad to tell him he is gay.
First he asks what his dad is doing right then and who else is in the room. Then he asks his dad if he will love him no matter what. His dad, says yes of course.
"Dad, I'm gay."
"OK, I still love you."
The soldier then talks about how he has always known. He asks his dad if he wants to tell mom. "(Laughing) I don't think so'"
It is clear that this is very emotional and difficult for the young soldier, on the other end of the line we don't know, but you can almost tell the father feels this and he starts telling his son...
"I still love you. "I am very proud of you." "I will always love you. "Your mom will always love you."
It clearly means a lot to the guy. It is just very heart warming to see a father still embrace his son and his son finally having what must have the weight of the world lifted off him.
His father then warns him....not to drink too much. The son explains, "It was Oktoberfest." A nice way to relive the tension.
The soldier tells his dad that in fact he has told everyone in his unit and no one cares. Shocker.
when the phone call ends the soldier wipes his brow and says, "Whew" Finis.
While one could get mad about how long it took to happen, I prefer to think positively and realize it is here now and men and women who are willing to serve our country can do so with full equality and without hiding who they are.
Thank you to ALL who serve.
