With the debut of the power rankings last week, some of the schools showed some upstart tendencies. In particular, Florida International's 3-0 justifiable top ten start came to a thud with Sun Belt play starting. However USC also sank with their first road game.
In the land of the serious contenders of course, both Alabama and LSU delivered powerful messages, while Oklahoma State delivered a huh-yooge win at College Station. Put them together, and we have a new number one, but one without much persistence. Still, Big Blue nation should rejoice - enjoy it while it lasts. Last week is in parentheses:

A lot of new teams in the Top 25 as the schedules reconstituted themselves. In particular we saw some conference losses for teams that had not lost yet. USC's plunge was related to their first road game. Penn State's rise into the Top 25 has more than a little to do with Temple's blasting of Maryland. Suddenly that win looks much better. Michigan moves to #1 largely on the strength of a win over San Diego State which looks very strong for now. Meanwhile Oklahoma slipped as Florida State lost. Clearly though, LSU has passed the eye test at this point. The rest of the rankings as usual is here:
