This will be a short diary, as I didn't see this already out.
As some have probably heard, North Carolina's very Republican legislature put on the May, 2012 ballot, an amendment to the state constitution to ban Gay marriage, to prevent the NC Supreme Court from eventually doing what Iowa's did and overthrow the state statute on equal rights grounds.
the good news is below the fold
Fifty-six percent of North Carolina residents oppose a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriages, according to a poll released Friday. ... The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Forty-four percent of respondents to a March 2009 Elon poll opposed any legal recognition of gay marriage in the state, but that stance was down to 34 percent in the latest poll. Meanwhile, a third of those polled this week back full marriage rights for same-sex couples, up from 21 percent in March 2009.

Basically, if we can just keep those numbers for the next 6 months, and get thm to turn out in May, the amendment will go down to defeat. The really tricky part is the May Primary will have potentally depressed Democratic turnout, as there is no Presidential, Gubanatorial, or Senatorial primary race in the state this year. but the potential to defeat a gay marriage amendment is a Southern state is on the horizon.
