I came away from the speech with several clear images.
The first is this - the President succeeded in connecting us with persons, with individuals - the victims who were killed, some who survived, Daniel Hernandez, the three who took down the shooter... as he did with the West Virginia miners, he connected us to individuals. In the process he reminded us that as a nation we are a collection of individuals, not a faceless mass subsumed into the noun people. In that sense, connecting with our emotions for each about whom he spoke, he illustrated the words that Daniel Hernandez emphasized: e pluribus unum - out of many, one.
And he connected us with the youthful exuberance of a 9-year-old. It that image - if there are puddles in heaven - that perhaps struck many most of all.
I know there are puddles in heaven. And I know who will join Christina in jumping in them:
Peace.
