I was rounded up on the Brooklyn bridge with a whole bunch of other folks. I got out about one. The worst part about all of this is that there were quite a few folks who had joined us with no intention of being arrested an the police basically herded people into an arrest situation. A number of them were frantic once they realized we were being arrested. I'm pretty sure thatthis was an intentional attempt to break our spirits and alienate us from our supporters. I also heard a report that a transperson was handcuffed to a wall near the toilet in the mens area because police refused to recognize this person's correct gender.
It won't work. Our spirits and we will persevere.
There is one very troubling development. People identified by police as women are being systematically treated worse than those identified as men. During holding all of the people segregated in the women section had their shoe laces taken and any other items that could theoretically be used for a suicide attempt. This included taking the head scarf of a Muslim woman. The male group was not subject to these sanctions. This follows the police taking three women last week to the mental health facility at bellevue(sp?) I'm working on getting reporters to cover this aspect of the story.
