So, tonight I wrote a poem. I should be grading, but I'm writing poetry instead.
Sometimes it just has to come out, you know?
We Are the 99%
Killer of Sacred Cows
So let me just say it clearly, what we are fighting for.
It's about the one percents, who take and take some more.
It's about the banks who took our money just to keep afloat
And then took all the rest of us and tossed us off the boat.
It's about a hundred thousand jobs that just evaporated.
It's about the media keeping us all terror-saturated.
It's about the fact that student debt is worse than any other
And PhDs and MBAs still live at home with mother.
It's about the actual 16 percent unemployment rate.
It's about the politicians selling bigotry and hate.
It's about the total failure of the American Dream
And it's about damned time that we all start to scream:
"Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!
Where's my golden parachute?
Last year I paid more taxes than Boeing or GE!
Why can't I get a job with my master's degree?"
Here's what we are fighting for and why we're fighting for it:
The American dream is dying fast and we cannot ignore it.
Privacy and health care have become commodities,
While people choose twixt food or heat and little children freeze.
The cost of education buries all our best and brightest
In stacks of debt that loom so high their future is denied us.
We're killing our entire planet just for oil and gas
While bridges fall and rivers flood and water tastes like ass.
According to our Supreme Court, corporations are just people.
If that's the case, then let them do like all the other sheeple
And pay their taxes, pay their fines, and own up to their errors
Instead of being let to hide their crimes in smoke and mirrors.
There's even more, but sad to say, this poem is too long.
I'll let you go investigate the truth of my sad song.
It's time to stand up, brethren, stand up with me and fight.
Do not let our country go gentle into that bad night.
