2:42pm:
Mayor Nutter Visits Occupy Philly in Middle of the Night
“Hi, I’m Michael,” Nutter said to groups of protesters this morning at about 1:15. Nutter didn’t send out a press release or make a big deal about being there. He said he was “working late,” and talked to protesters like he was actually with them.
“We’re all Americans,” he said.
2:03pm: From ZhenRen in the comments:
Portland [ ... ]
The last I heard, what is going on in Portland is that the parks that are being occupied were scheduled previously to be used as a staging ground for a bicycle marathon today, so the police and mayor wanted the protesters to leave by 9am today. If the police are surrounding the place, it would be to make them move. There was discussion of occupying the sidewalk until the marathon ended. There may have been other plans made since I left, last night. I don't see any information so far to explain what is going on, except that tweets are saying that people in the marathon should call the marathon organizers to urge them to "share" the space with the occupiers. Last night, the police were very low key. If they have paddywagons, it would be in anticipation that the protesters would either occupy the space at the adjacent FEDERAL owned park (which the occupiers have already decided to avoid) or to deal with resistance if they refuse to move out of the way of the marathon event.
From the released statement, it seems as if the OccupyPortlanders have decided to stay in the park, and are probably negotiating with the marathon organizers.
2:00pm: Krugman:
Confronting the Malefactors
There’s something happening here. What it is ain’t exactly clear, but we may, at long last, be seeing the rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people.
[ ... ]
A weary cynicism, a belief that justice will never get served, has taken over much of our political debate — and, yes, I myself have sometimes succumbed. In the process, it has been easy to forget just how outrageous the story of our economic woes really is. So, in case you’ve forgotten, it was a play in three acts.
[ ... ]
And if the protests goad some politicians into doing what they should have been doing all along, Occupy Wall Street will have been a smashing success.

Believe it or not, Cantor has — by his definiton — “condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans” when he endorsed the Tea Party movement.
1:54pm: From gooderservice in the comments, a comment by Whimsical Rapscallion
I'm involved in the occupation of Lexington, KY. I witnessed a Socialist and a Tea Party activist standing side by side, picket signs in hand, having a productive conversation. They began by agreeing to disagree on specific political issues, and found common ground in the need for a systemic overhaul so that we can begin hashing out those differences in a productive way. We're all human beings, and we're all in this together. I spoke to a right-winger who had misconceptions about the movement, and invited him to come down. He's now a regular fixture in the acoustic jam sessions, and has donated food to the community. Libertarians are represented as well. Ron Paul fans were willing to set aside their Paul signs (the movement endorses no specific candidate or political party) to join us in the cry for a system that works for everyone. Us vs Them is becoming obselete. We are meeting each other, we are recognizing one another's humanity, and we are building from the ground up a community whose core value (insofar as there is one) is caring about one another.

Occupy Dallas
I apologize for the delay in information. In solidarity with the protesters, our media team went to camp with them last night and attend the General Assembly Meeting this morning. The protesters had to squeeze their group within the concrete walls of the JFK Memorial. Some provocateur installed a spinkler system in that park!!! I will be getting some updates very soon. I believe the protesters will be marching today to various buildings to protest. Stay tuned for location updates very shortly.

12:29pm: Michael Moore on Weds. night warning #OWS not to let politicians co-opt the movement.
Tonight, Wednesday, October 5th, 2011, Mike made his fifth visit to #OccupyWallStreet and delivered the following address from the steps on the east side of Liberty Plaza (Zuccotti Park) amplified by the 'human microphone':
12:27pm: Livestream: Nights are really cold, makes everyone think about the coming cold weather -- another call for warm clothes and winter gear.
- Also heard someone saying this on the Livestream but I don't know who it was or who they were referring to:

12:05pm: Livestream: United Steelworker representatives are being interviewed by Thoren, are there in Zuccotti showing solidarity, supporting the #OWS movement. My notes from the interview which was, as best I can tell, with two USW men:
One says that there hasn't been anything of this magnitude since the Vietnam war protests - this has the potential to be even greater than that and may really make a difference. The other rep says that past protests tended to be day long events, one day marches. Says he wants to see his children have the kind of lifestyle and opportunities that he had (age 51). Dell (age 52) says people are saying this is just a bunch of kids fooling around and he has been around this park and that is just not true. There are people of all ages. And this could go worldwide. He just did an interview with a journalist from Tokyo. Says there will always be the rich and always be the poor but in the 50s, 60s and 70s there was a healthy middle class. Since then there has been a redistribution of wealth. We see first hand when negotiating contracts that cut benefits and they say it's to increase profits but it is really to funnel more money upward.
USW rep says we live in a global society and we understand that and we are reaching out across the oceans to workers -- Workers United. Not isolationists. Bring up the wages of the workers that we compete with. Other rep says that begins with fair trade. Not free trade but fair trade. Don't trade with countries that don't have fair trade. Chinese products are unrealistically cheap. Steve Jobs was an amazing person but one of the issues was how they just resourced to China -- he spoke about free speech and free trade but outsourced to a country that steps on the necks of workers. Need to rebuild our manufacturing here, really need that. Other rep says to keep them updated on events and they will bring as many people as possible and give them as much notice as possible. Our people are working but some have alternate schedules and will be here. We'll be here.
12:10pm: Latest celebrites to join the OWS protest are Penn Badgley and Tim Robbins. Yoko Ono expressed support via Twitter.
11:58am:
Occupy Wall Street: Getting Back to Business After Clashes With Police
Zuccotti Park on Thursday night was as packed as I've seen it on a weekday since the movement began nearly three weeks ago. Twenty-four hours after their biggest march, in conjunction with several powerful unions, the Occupy Wall Street protesters resumed their process, part of deciding what's next.
[ ... ]
In the meantime, the protesters have marches planned for the stock market's opening and closing bells on Friday. Because many protesters come in for the weekend, the Friday afternoon march may be one of the biggest yet, with the exception of the union march.
11:52am: Plutocracy Files has a liveblog.

- Police have kind of been sticking to themselves on the edges of the park. They are there all day, all night.
- Barricade still up on Wall Street
- There are a lot of people there, estimated at 600 this morning, growing as the day goes on
- Someone from the Comfort Working Group (Thea) is speaking:
-- Calling for donations: sleeping bags and mats (going thru 100/day)
-- large camping backpacks
-- toiletries
-- ski pants, ski gloves, down coats, goggles, scarves
- Monica: "The mood is really, really great. When you wake up there are a lot of people waking up and singing and having breakfast and thousands of journalists"
- An event at Walker St at Chart? St 8-8:30pm
11:25am:
Livestream: Text on screen says Oct 5 but they are live in NYC. They said there is a march today by a Haitian group at 5pm.

Occupy Wall Street: Interview With Micah White From Adbusters
Micah explained that Adbusters has been advocating for a citizen movement against corporations for 20 years and that in July of this year they began considering doing a protest on Wall Street. He continued that Adbusters call to action was, "responded to so enthusiastically that... they organized themselves."
11:11am: Eliot Spitzer suggests that a stock transfer tax should be one of the protesters demands:

10:00 Mayor Bloomberg tells unions backing OWS that they should, actually, be thanking the banks.
9:50 Love this. Pulitzer-winning PolitiFact studies Michael Moore's charge that no CEOs had been arrested yet for "bringing down the country." Concludes: "most true." No kidding!
9:45 Eric Cantor is "concerned" about "growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country."
8:20 Krugman in Friday column goes all Buffalo Springfield on us, with "something happening here / what it is ain't exactly clear," but still, he loves "the rise of a popular movement that, unlike the Tea Party, is angry at the right people." Elsewhere at NYT: How Occupy offers hope for, and threat to, Obama.

Occupy Wall Street, Steve Jobs, and the Crazy Ones
The pragmatic progressives like me didn't start this movement. We thought about the long-term impact for the Left and the short-term electoral optics for Democrats. When the economy collapsed, we were quiet, the Tea Party spoke up, and the rage the country felt was directed towards government, not Wall Street. In short, we were afraid.
Thankfully, the crazy ones weren't.
10:21am:
From Mother Jones
This week, Mother Jones tracked down and spoke with the two activists behind the 99 Percent sensation, whose identities have remained unknown until now.
9:54am: Livestream is rebroadcasting the Q & A session with Naomi Klein last night at Zuccotti Park, with a huge crowd. I transcribed a lot of that in yesterday's liveblog.
9:49am: Hat tip to Agathena. From the /New York Times:
Democratic strategists conceded that Occupy Wall Street was a fledgling movement — it began in New York’s financial district last month and has spread to about a dozen other cities — with a murky future but said they viewed it as a potential boon. The left has not had a popular movement to energize progressive voters for some time, even as the Tea Party has become a vital force in Republican politics.
9:30am: Wow, there are some powerful photos coming out of this movement. Look at this collection from
The Guardian
8:50am:
