I have long felt that one if not thee most banal phrases in the English language was “It’s nothing personal it’s just business.” This phrase or at least the thinking process associated with it has been used as an excuse for some of the worst business practices in corporate America. When I hear this phrase I can only think “Well maybe for you its just business, but for me it’s personal.”
Whenever a parent has to choose between buying the medication they need to survive and taking care of their child, it’s personal.
Whenever someone looses their job of 20 years because the company he worked at shuts down a factory and ships it overseas and then gets a tax break for doing so, it’s personal.
Whenever someone dies because they can’t afford medical coverage or if they do have insurance and the insurance company denies their claim, it’s personal.
Whenever a bank forecloses on someone’s house because the bank took out a credit default swap on that person’s loan betting that they wouldn’t be able to pay it off and then uses any excuse they can find to make sure the person defaults, it’s personal.
Whenever a millionaire congressman calls for cuts to Social Security and Medicare while refusing to even consider a tax increase on the wealthy or cuts to defense spending, it’s personal
Whenever a bridge collapses because the desperately needed repairs weren’t done because a politician was to busy shoveling the money into a campaign donors pocket, it’s personal.
Whenever the rights of labor are ignored or stolen outright by some ideological hack politician that’s trying to kill unions for his 1% masters, it’s personal.
Whenever a young person has to go into massive debt in order to get a college education and then is unable to find a job after they graduate, it’s personal.
Whenever you start and perpetuate wars simply to enrich military contractors and oil magnates. Sacrificing the lives, minds and bodies of those who have sworn to protect our nation, it's personal.
I could go on forever with this but I think you get the idea. So to all the pundits and politicians out there who don’t understand what the Occupy movement is all about I just want to say. This time it’s not just business as usual, this time it’s personal.
Woo Hoo I made it onto the Community Spotlight, Thanks.
